I too have many a shirt missing a pocket. It keeps me buying new shirts, so that my wardrobe is always fresh. Positive, positive... I also love the look of the clerks in a store marveling at my smoldering shirt pocket with a lit pipe in it. They always tend to take this way worse than me. Poor things. 
Charming anecdote. I had an "older" math teacher in high school (he was probably younger than I am now!) who would dismiss the class early so he could get to the teacher's lounge for a pipe. He moved so slowly that we would pass him in the hall. One day I walked by and noticed smoke coming from his jacket pocket. When I pointed it out, he took out the pipe and brushed the embers from the flap of his pocket—and continued on his way. Great math teacher by the way.
I have a bunch of Carhart T-shirts that have small holes in them from the embers that fall on them. Still wear them because I figure news ones would end up with the same damage to them.
Hey, let's not get so charmed with this idea that we immolate ourselves. My wife doesn't call me the safety officer for nothing.

Lots of wisdom in his writing. Even if he was occasionally preoccupied while he was smoking.
Aren't a few of his pipes on display at Wheaton, in the Wade Center?
I am sure his experiences in WW1 and family tragedies made him more aware of what is important and what is not. I've read Mere Christianity.

Agree sweet home. Lewis is not often remembered for his Great War experiences. He was a complex, complicated and fascinating man. I’ve been to the “bird and baby” where the inklings would share a pipe, or a pint to discuss. Would love to have been a fly on the wall.

I've often considered that smoking is what you do on the way to eternity. Smoking is not the point, but living.
Hmmm…I often don’t have a shirt pocket and my coat pockets contain too much kindling. Things I need to change to be like C.S. Lewis or @cosmicfolklore

I love that story! I understand why people wore smoking jackets ‘back in the day’. Make perfect sense, that and helps with the smell of tobacco which didn’t concern as many back then. I like this quote too!
