I hate cutty pipes.
It's not the aesthetics, it's smoking them. The bowl angles away preventing any view of the tobacco during a light. Wearing progressive glasses makes it all the more difficult, as you circle a match, near field and cross-eyed, over an estimated position -- the bowl, your fingers, the dog. They are evil and a curse.
I feel better now. Identifying your problems is the first step in resolving them.

I am on your side. I have one cutty pipe and rarely smoke it for the same reasons. I want to like it, I really do....

I don't find this to be a problem. There was a bit of a learning curve, but I got over top of it after about three relights.
I should note that I don't wear reading glasses, etc. which may change things.

No cutty's here. For a rakish angle to the bowl and brim, I think a yacht/zulu achieves the style without the learning curve. I also have a Johs bent Dublin with the brim cut at a dashing angle.

I recently purchased a Briarworks C141 Cutty because I liked the shape and old world style. Love it. Smokes well.

I've had many cutty and beige shaped pipes over the years because I love the shape. In fact I've had forward canted bowl that are stacks and bulldogs also. I end up selling them though because I don't like smoking them. I can never see what I'm doing when lighting, and tamping. I've tried and tried but they usually just sit there and don't get smoked. So I sell them, and haven't regretted selling any of them. Wish I could get along with them better as I really like the looks. :(
