@ cosic art history!
Hey cosmicfolklore, I take offense at that! My daughter did her graduate work in contemporary Chinese art! (Sarcasm alert) (end sarcasm) Talk about your basic useless degree. Oh yea, she does have a decent job in research at a major

university. Her research skills did pay off. Let's neuter our language until no one can say anything. Either that or just listen to what we're trying to communicate rather than looking for offense.
As one who has worked with many creepy kids (whom I love, and not in a creepy way) with spectrum disorders - kudos to you and the father for engaging the kid where he was.

@Adam, I wish I were knowledgeable enough to do that. I am by no means an expert myself. I just have great appreciation for certain designs. Maybe, in a few more years I will be able to at least name a Russian carver.
@eastern, you're absolutely correct. I am not an expert on any mental (is it ok to say "mental"?) conditions at all. All kids seem awkwardly creepy to me. They're like little people with hands and feet that you have no idea what they'll do with next, ha ha. I also have a friend who has an 8 year old that speak fluently in several other languages. He creeps me out, but I think he's "normal." -whatever normal means.

Maybe it was just a dad who doesn't smoke entertaining his son's fascination with pipes. But, that is also creepy, IMO.
Ha ha, Dan, you always crack me up. Thanks!!
@Greg, I resemble that remark also. A minor in Art History leaves me the guy at parties boring people in the corners of rooms talking about Neo-post-modernism verses Spanish Baroque. It hasn't earned me a dime, ha ha.
I engage everyone. That may be one of my faults and virtues. I've never met a stranger. A few jerks, yes; strangers, no.

Ha, I tried to google "asburgers" as texmex had mentioned, and found nothing, but then I tried "aspergers" and found a bunch of interesting stuff. Dan Akroyd has it, and his fixation is law enforcement. He collects badges. Who knows, maybe the kids will grow up to be a Blues Brother, ha ha. Come to think of it, Dan Akroyd is kind of creepy too :puffy:

I guess it's better to be fasinated with pipes than power rangers.

I know what Santa is getting him on his 18th Christmas.

As a warrior against all things politically correct, I found the word 'creepy' very appropriate to fit Cosmic's description of his perception of the situation.
As I am a pipesmoker, my 9 yo has a decent working knowledge of pipes and tobaccos gleaned from watching me learn about the hobby myself.
Thus I read with interest how you came to your conclusions. I agree with you. With no personal experience that is odd for a child to land on that topic. I also think that ANYONE who thinks positively of pipes and pipesmoking should be cherished in today's culture and the father applauded.
There are a great many moonbats in this country who have bought into the 'ALL tobacco is EVIL and should be purged from the Earth' train of thought...
Fortunately, the people at my B&M love my kid. He helps them price stuff and clean up. lol.

I actually found cosmicfolklore's way of describing the experience appropriate. I am personally about as close as you can get to Aspergers, without a definitive diagnosis. I'm basically borderline. I can recall all kinds of nonsensical facts. But struggle greatly with face to face personal interactions. That's actually the only reason I haven't been to the STL pipe show yet. But back to the kid, I could see how that would seem "Creepy". In social settings, I just stay quiet or say or do very awkward things, unless I know a little something about the subject. Then I can name facts I didn't even know I knew. The mind is a beautiful and unendingly strange thing.

Even outside the autism spectrum, many human talents occur in personalities that don't completely

fit the sociability models we expect and rely on, even if we ourselves don't always exhibit these traits.

I was in the my thirties before I could navigate most social occasions (parties) with any degree of

self-confidence, and I am still somewhat puzzled by the fact that most people find these events

distinctly enjoyable. I'm at the place where I can play along, and sometimes forget myself enough to

have fun with my particular circle of people. But the idea that the cry, "It's party time!" is some sort of

an invitation to enjoyment still gives me the impulse to head for the door. So though I do find some

people "creepy," i.e. incomrehensible, I can see some of them in myself, often times.

My ADHD is creepy to me sometimes. I'll hear or see something coming and know for sure that it will break my concentration and still have no power to fight it. Also, one minute I'll have no energy at all and then.......BAM! There won't be enough for me to do. Then there is the boredom, my single greatest enemy of all time. It is so easy for me to be bored and I hate it lol.

You know what? I think if a young man chooses to get enjoyment from knowledge about our hobby, good on him! Insofar as he doesn't break any laws, go for it. If he wants in, he can be 'in'. Gooble Gobble!

creepy adjective ˈkrē-pē : strange or scary : causing people to feel nervous and afraid

From Meriam-Webster

I think cosmic nailed it. His intial reaction was trepedation at the fact some kid may be on here spouting advice/opinions and had never had even tried a pipe. This fit's with the definition. Perhaps we are/have been misled by Opie Cunningham. Special needs or not Cosmic offered his assesment of the situation HE was in.. and it was Creepy... so lighten up Francis.

That is kind of creepy, but kind of cool that he knew so much about pipes, and tobaccos. Maybe when he is of age he will smoke pipes. or maybe become a great pipe maker, or famous tobacco blender.
