never had a card stolen that I know of, but then I work in the the online credit card processing tech side so I know how easy it really is and take precautions. A master card prepaid anywhere card is accepted just about any place they take a regular master card including online, so I generally use one of those. just call them up or go to Wally World to reload it before I make a purchase. That means the card has little or no money on it unless I'm spending it it's a little safer than my check card being out there. I also run a tight reign on my network. only use my card from my secured network, only on secured sites, all the stuff they tell you to do.
You wouldn't believe the merchants that call in some days though. Sometimes explaining security and credit card standards to people that own a business is like talking to a brick wall, others they understand first time right away.
oh and a phone is a phone, a smart phone is a toy with a phone attached. A pad device is a toy without a phone attached. An x-box/Wii/PS3 is a toy. These devices may be great, they may simplify the hell out of your life, you can carry and view important documents on your phone now that's awesome. These devices were not intended to function in the same manner as a well kept PC. They should never be viewed as your primary or worse only computing device. Many online card processing platforms actually will not function outside of the big two browsers (IE/Mozilla) reliably. Chrome is steadily gaining acceptance, but it still updates fairly quickly and is difficult to maintain compatability for. I-phone browsers and Android browsers are not designed in the same manner, they do no properly process the the same security function checks that PC browsers can. And you'll notice I keep using PC, you don't want to see the PC versus Mac rant I almost have to resort to profanity for that one.
that being said
@smeigs: sorry to hear about your info getting stolen, hope you can get everything cleared up quickly and with the min amount of pain and hassle
