I wonder, does anybody know what it costs in the Carolinas. If it’s reasonable, maybe after gasoline comes down we should have a conclave wherever it’s the least crazy tax. JR’s is in Selma, NC. Bring your own pipe.

Last year tub of Carter Hall at discounted tobacco shop was ~ $40.00 in AR, USA.

That's with a 60% tobacco tax as far as I've been told.

Do you know what the prices are down there? I had heard they were outrageous, but I hadn't heard anything more than that.
I'm sure some of the members actually in Aus and NZ will comment at some point! I left Australia in Jan 2020 but since then they have increased the excise duty on tobacco.

As of yesterday (1st March 2022) the duty payable on 1Kg of tobacco is AU $1610 !!!

So using the 14oz tub example...

AU$1610 = US $1172 (at current rates)

14oz = 435,5 grammes

$38.25 + (1172 x .4356) = $548.77

+gst (i.e VAT) at 10%

total US $603.64

Lots of States have high excise taxes on tobacco that have been on the books for decades. Sales taxes have been payable, but the onus has been on the consumer to pay them for online sales. That changed with the Wayfair ruling.

And technically, you're on the hook for the excise taxes, even if it's mailed from out of state. Just because it hasn't been enforced doesn't mean you couldn't be assessed down the road. Paying the excise tax is on the honor system. But that too is beginning to change.

Are cigars equally as expensive in NZ?
Oh yeah. I just quickly pulled up a random price comparison. On SPC a single AJ Fernandez Bella’s Artes Robusto is $9.50 compared to $40 here.

That said, cigars are exempt from the tobacco import ban, so they can still be ordered at American prices and then have duty and GST/VAT on them - this works out cheaper as one doesn’t have to pay brokerage or import fees and can use the super saver shipping option which saves about $20 on a small order.

I'm 20 minutes from JRs in Selma. A tub is 32 bucks. They have a lounge. Ya'll come on up.
If you're ever in the Myrtle Beach area, call Low Country Pipes and Cigars. They are Smoking Pipes which is right down the road from the store. Tell them you're visiting the store and what items you want and they will have it waiting for you when you get there. I've done it.

One of the local shops here, a 50g tin was about $25 for me - something which smokingpipes would sell for $15 or so. Some of this is local dealer markup I’m sure.

That might be an ok price for a tin of really good stuff.

What was the tobacco @ $25.00?

This was some Peterson MyMixture 965, but it was a roundabout price for most of the tins. After tax about $25 USD at retail for a 50g or 1.75oz tin’s not bad
