@TheIronMonkey and I are likely the only two Americans who own one of these (below). An old Austrian made multi-tool instrument, bottle opener, tamper, possible Allen wrench LOL... and it's made to be carried in your front shirt pocket.

A fossilized sea urchin spine here. There was a,guy on here about 10 years ago who sold them.

I use a 2 1/2" cabinet screws that have a little larger than average screw head. I have a dozen as tampers laying around at any given time and boxes of extras in my installation tool box's. As a bonus, gently scraping the inside of the bowl with the screw threads make a nice and easy way to keep the cake even. I rarely have to ream a pipe.

I have a Czech tool which I hardly ever use. It just sits on my key ring and pokes me in the leg. I use one of a few roofing nails or my finger.

I ordered a set of those aluminum nail-type tampers. Keep one in a pocket. Good to go. (Not too crazy.)

I’ve taken to carrying golf tees, just got a bag of 50 bamboo ones off scamazon, light enough they don’t fall out of shirt pocket when working (and cheap enough to not fret if they do).

I have taken to using my finger-keeps me from tamping too tightly.

I have liquorice root sticks to chew on and they're really nice hard wood so I've carved and sanded a couple of the larger ones down to use as pipe tools and I've been really happy with them. If I lose them I just make another.

I’ve various tampers at the ready…none of them exotic or extraordinary. However, my index finger usually is employed for convenience as it’s always readily available. ️

This I guess could be considered my craziest pipe tamper. Only because it cost more than any pipe I've bought. My Astas Meerschaum old man tamper that I commissioned. It's based on my wooden ones my friend made.

Nothing "crazy" about this one, but I made this tamper with a galvanized roofing nail and a dowel pin.

Used one of these in a pinch once. Now it’s my favorite. The flat sides help holding it steady and although it’s hard to see in the picture the sides of the nail head are slightly rounded which somewhat matches the inside of the bowl.
