Hello again,
I just bought a new Savinelli, it was pre-coated with black stuff, I smoked it a few times, the taste was significant less good as my other not-pre-coated Savinelli. So I carefully sanded it out. A long blue/green vein appeared along the chamber. I smoked it once and the vein transformed into a thin crack. What kind of flaw is it? I never saw it before. Why is Savinelli hiding something like that behind their coating and selling this? How long will it take to crack the entire pipe? Questions over questions. I hope you guys are not bored about that endless crack-in-the-pipe-topic.

Wow! I’ve never seen that before with savinelli, but do remember, they turn thousands of bowls a day, and at that rate, they can’t catch every flaw. I love Savinelli pipes and have never had an issue, but I’d take it up with the company you bought it from. They should replace it for you.

I doubt that Savinelli is intentionally hiding cracks behind the “black stuff”. Perhaps you should bring it to their attention, or contact the vendor. If it’s new, then they might be able to remedy the matter. GL

Yeah, see what you can do to get a replacement. This depends on the retailer, but many are quite obliging. Others only teach you not to buy from them again. In that case, try some pipe mud (ash and water) and see what happens, or hopefully doesn't.

Manufacturers definitely do use the coating as a way to hide "perceived" blemishes to the bowl. Like a bruised/bug-bitten fruit or vegetable, it's not that it's 'defected' but it can often be perceived to be lesser.

As for OP's specific situation: I'd contact wherever you got the pipe/Sav and see what they have to say about it. My only concern would be that you did sand down the bowl - I'm not going to comment on your abilities or anything but - they might have a point to argue with regards to replacing your pipe.

Sure, but they did not ask one question. Got the UPS message that the replacement pipe is already shipped. Maybe next time I do no sanding I guess, and just order a new savinelli without precoating if I want no coating :)
