This pipe smoking is starting to grow on me, but it might be awhile before I know that this will be a lifetime hobby and therefore merit significant outlays of money. With that said, I'm looking to purchase as much quality as I can for about $70-80 (please don't snicker, this is a newbie forum!). I've recently purchased a Savinelli straight rusticated, but my other pipe has a bend to it and I would like a LITTLE bend with my next pipe. Searching for pipes by price range has been murder for me so far. I like a pipe somewhere around 6 inches. I'm trying to give as much description as I can without knowing much terminology. Thanks for any help you can provide.

To add: I think I would rather get a smooth pipe, rather than rustic, this time around.

I'm not sure about the exact pricing but I think Petersons average out around $95 and have just about every shape and style imaginable. Really good pipes, worth the extra few dollars in my opinion.

I'd start shopping at several of the sponsor sites, looking under Peterson. I think a few may even have Petersons at

$80, or close. I know you can get some Savenelli, Johs, Luciano, and Butz-Choquin in that price range too. Good

luck!

Keep in mind that factory-made pipes like Peterson and Savinelli have a WIDE range of price points. I think they both have lower end models for around $50 and their higher ends are in the hundreds. So there's really no "typical" Peterson or Savinelli. To me it would come down to stems; vulcanite (Peterson) or lucite (Savinelli)
That being said, I've owned many Petersons over the years, and got rid of most of them because I just don't like their stem work. Not the material, but they seem either too round (like the P-lips) or too thick and chunky.
Check out Neerup or look at the estates from online retailers like smokingpipes.com, P&C, Cup o' Joes or Dave Neeb.

I've been spending a lot of time at pipes and cigars, and its a daunting task to look at every pipe in order to find some in my price range. Thanks for the advice so far. I've been focusing on Savinellis primarily just to focus on SOMETHING. Many on that site are out of stock.
By the way, what does PAD and TAD mean?

Don't forget about Nording! They start with the Eriksen line around $40 and go on up from there. I have a coupe of Nordings and I've been very pleased with them!

If you get a peterson, buy from an irish online shop. About half price f what you'll pay in the states.

I suggest looking through the estate sales on PM vendors pages as well. There are some nice deals on great pipes. I recently picked up an unsmoked Comoy (pre-Cadogan era) and got it for $82.00

If you go with a Peterson, look at the 999 shape. Truly my favorite - fits the hand comfortably and I've always gotten a great smoke. A classic Prince shape with a slightly bent stem is also a nice fit.
I looked at Mike's pipe pages (Roth's post), he does beautiful work and there were several to tempt me but I'm saving up for a Pete Rosslare 999.

I'm with Cortez on this one. In that price range Savinelli hands down.
I would also suggest Tsuge when smokingpipes.com has them stocked up. I've gotten a nice little bent bulldog from them for about half price.

By the way nobody is going to laugh at you for wanting a pipe in any price range on this forum.
You can buy a fantastic pipe in that price range.

Damn, that Savinelli "Kit" deal is nice, no matter if you're new or not. Great dimensions on that pipe will make it very versatile, for my tastes. I like the pipe bag and tools it comes with. Of all the pipes, I like that one the most. They smoke fine without the filter. I have one, and with or without the filter, it smokes pretty dry, and can't really tell a difference in taste, to be honest. When I use the adaptor in place of filter, the bottom of the bowl is wet, so I don't bother with it.
Personally, I snickered a little bit. More of a Dr. Evil laugh, actually. Sorry, I couldn't help it. :)

Yeah that's a great little kit.
OP I think you'll find a lot more selection in that price range in a rusticated pipe.
