Why doth many of thou protest the price increase of mac baren tobacco for instance, but not give a rats wit, about how most cigars seem to be 10-25$ each now?

Why complain/protest the cost of either? Just pay the required and enjoy! Seems best! I haven't seen a price reduced on anything because a member bellyached/vented on-line. Some members do seem to enjoy venting though. rotf If you can't afford to smoke, quit. It's a choice, for some apparently, not a wise one.

cigars actually make esoterica blends on resale sights seem offordable.

Ive scoffed at people listing a 2 ounce tin of mcclellands frog morton for 250$. But after looking at how many people love 50$ cigars... it seems reasonable.

Never really bothered to look. Though I have smoked them in the past they just don't seem as high class as a pipe.

After all of the ridicule thrown at McClelland when they were still in production, I still do. I've got many tins of their blends that cost $15/100 grams and less and would never pay more than that for them. Though they had many fans, McClelland's current wide spread acclaimed was only garnered after their closing.

I smoked cigars now and then in the old days. But i thought 25-30$ for 5 packs was pricey enough. But for a single cigar thats beyond crazy.

And actually makes me willing to spend 50$ on a 10 year old pouch of prince albert if i found one

Yep, was recently perusing cigars and could not believe how much they cost now. A couple decades ago, I'd smoke a cigar 1-2x week but would buy alternatives from JR Cigar. Good thing I only want to smoke a cigar once or twice a year because I wouldn't pay that price now. Still working on about 15 assorted cigars an ex-colleague gave me over 6 years ago.

You can find good cigars for 3 bucks and under... but that still makes them a more expensive smoke, even at that price.

One of the great things about pipes is that you can have luxury and thriftiness together in harmony. It's what started me in with pipes to begin with.
I don't know if I'd go THAT cheap 😂
I generally find my floor to be around $5 with cigars but otherwise agreed haha. And def agree that you can comparatively get far more higher quality smokes for the money with pipe, there's no question there.

To me tho OP isn't comparing apples to apples. Yes there's tons of new boutique cigars today that cost all kinds of cash.. but in my experience standard cigar brands have more or less kept the same price or at least not appreciated as much as pipe tobacco.

Take the Romeo Y Julietta 1875 (prob one of the most popular and imo best "middle of the road" cigars on the American market)... if purchased the correct way I can still get them for more or less what they went for 10 years ago (~$5 per stick)
I cannot say the same about any given pound of Stokkebye or even Lane pipe tobacco.

Now what the reasons for that are could be debated but imo I think its that cigars are just more popular and a slightly less monopolized industry.

I socked away seegars when JR Ultimates were under $75 a box, and other decent stogies could be had for half that.. I haven’t bought any for years and probably never will ever again.

People smoke $50 cigars to be seen, not to enjoy them.
