Two tins from P&C arrived today. I opened and jarred both tins, did not see any visible mold. Dated 5/24/16 tins 1750 & 1762.

Damn. This thread is really scaring me. I haven't been this excited for a tobacco for a long time.
Go figure this one of a kind tobacco has this issue. Heartbroken.

A local B&M has tins. I'm going to buy a few. If they are moldy, I will mail them to C&D.
Otherwise, I will enjoy them, in recognition of the vital rule:
Smoke what you like, and like what you smoke.

If you're going to jar what looks like an unaffected tin, give it some time to see if anything develops before smoking it. Also, if you have more than one good tin, don't combine them into one jar. Jar each tin separately. Just because you don't currently see mold doesn't mean it's not there, and you could contaminate all of your potentially "good" stock. Chances are that the whole business is contaminated, just developing at different rates.

I agree 100% with what Sable said, just because the mold isn't visible now doesn't mean it not there. It could be that the whole batch is affected or it could be that just tobacco processed on certain days is affected.
Either way C&D needs to take a seriously detailed look into why this is happening. They need to contract every customer that purchased this tobacco and explain to them exactly what the issue is and that they are recalling the product. They need to convince people to return unopened tins, their investigation needs to start with these unopened tins. Honestly I think they need to contract this out to someone with a strong background in food born contamination. Saying your going to fix the problem without a solid plan isn't fixing the problem, its stick your head in a hole and hoping for the best.

Jeremy's heartfelt apology is very much appreciated, however, it seems like a full scale manufacturers recall is appropriate at this time.

This is really too bad. I only ordered 3 tins, but Old Belt VAs from my home state are right up my alley. Was really looking forward to this one. I encourage them to try again with a different crop some day -- clearly there's a market for it.

Please note that we are now actively trying to get all tins of Carolina Red Flake back to C&D. Smokingpipes.com is reaching out to all of their customers who purchased tins to arrange returns (if this is you, you should be receiving an email shortly), and Laudisi Distribution Group is contacting all other retailers to have unsold product returned as well as to reach out to their customers to arrange returns.

I too have smoked one bowl from my tin. I love the blend, but don't want to knowingly smoke mold spores. With only one bowl smoked, can I return it?

We’re fairly confident that we understand what went wrong with Carolina Red Flake, and once we are completely confident that we can properly treat this particular red Virginia varietal with our anti-fungal agent in a way that guarantees it won’t spoil, we will consider re-introducing it in the future.
Would love to know what was thought to have gone wrong with this bunch.
PS: Wanted to correct myself above when I referred accidentally to C&D's preservative as microban, rather than mycoban, aka calcium propanoate. I wonder if C&D might comment on what impact this unfortunate recall will have on the treatment of C&D tobaccos going forward?

It sounds like riding a fine line here - C&D I'm sure want to produce the most natural tobacco possible without added chemicals(which is what I want) but at the same time control mold and harmful bacteria. I'm sure this would be quite difficult.

Shit happens... they are doing the best they can in a bad situation. Anyone, anywhere, has had a bad day at work. Sometimes we have epically bad days and that may be what this is for C&D.
In the end, its not poisoned baby formula, lead painted toys, or lying Volkswagen diesels. It's pipe tobacco.
I think we can all get over it.

I'd love to know if baking the tin, or microwaving the tobacco would remove any smoking risk. I have already smoked a bowl of CR (the day it arrived) from a tin that has mold. I actually noticed it looked odd, but blew it off and loaded it up anyway. That was five days ago.
