I think they're definitely worth picking up. That way you can try a tin with a year on it, 3 years on it, 5, etc. I think it's really interesting to see how the flavors change over time with a blend. Should be even better with this one.

I thought about just grabbing when I was there today returning my Xikar lighter (again, ugh), but I have spent a lot of money on tobacco this month, even by my standards.

Are you kidding me? What's the problem Cornell & Diehl? It couldn't be a storage problem by the consumer because it's a new tin. Tin couldn't have been opened for more than 5 days. I have 12 tins in the cellar, and now I have to worry about them being moldy....that sucks. Reasons for this sillyoldbear?

A few people have reported mold out of fresh tins. Would this only effect this particular small batch limited Red Flake or is it possibly a more widespread C&D problem? Planning two big orders in the next month and am a little bit worried.

Then one I opened was fine. I won't know about the others 3 for years.
And I have seen no mold in any C&D blend ever.

Well, now I'm for sure opening the one I got. If it's bad, I'll be most disappointed. If there is mold on part of the tobacco, presumably the whole tin is bad, yes?

I was planning on opening one of the tins I got until later in the week but this prompted me to pop the top sooner.
Tin 2099/2400, no mold, just wonderful smelling red Virginia.
I must say this tobacco is a bit moister than I'm used to getting from C&D. It's not at Sam Gawith saturation levels but it's certainly got some room to dry.
I suppose I'll wait to see if this is just an isolated case before I decide what to do with the other tins I got for the cellar. Here's to hoping there's no widespread problem.

I kinda think it's like cheese... Cut off the moldy part and jar it.
Ehhhh, I don't know. Not sure I'd want to be sucking in the mold spores that are surely distributed throughout the tobacco, even after you discard the moldy part.

ANY mold in the tin.....DISCARD! DO NOT SMOKE You can keep it for a refund or return it to the manufacturer, but don't just pick off the moldy bits for Christ's sake!

I guess this to be expected to a degree in blends that do not saturate products with microban. It's unfortunate this occurred in a blend that can not be replaced.
Edit: but seeing all those beards dangling about, it's small wonder.... :nana:

Hello all,
In regards to the handful of instances that have been reported of mold spores affecting tins of Carolina Red Flake, we're highly disappointed and extremely embarrassed. We're distressed because, on the one hand, given some of the advancements we've made in the workshop over the last few months, we really and truly believed moldy tobacco was part of C&D's past. And on the other hand, more importantly, it disturbs us to the core that we could make and sell anything that's not up to our standard. . All of our fans, all of our customers, have every right to be upset about this. And we're going to do what we can to make it right.
We're looking into how limited this mold spore problem is surrounding Carolina Red Flake. But honestly, we're not likely to ever know just how many tins might actually be defective out there.
Subsequently, we're addressing the issue at C&D. It's early still, and so we're not 100% sure yet what this process looks like going forward, but obviously our anti-fungal treatment methodology needs adjustment—and we'll do just that, without compromising our commitment to produce a quality pipe tobacco that's as natural and additive-free as we can afford to make it.
But what can we do for you to try to make this right, now?
If you've got a tin or tins of Carolina Red Flake that you don't want, if it has (or they have) got mold in it, or you're concerned there might be mold in it/them, or if you just don't want the tin(s) anymore for any reason, contact Laudisi Distribution Group (sales@laudisi.com, 843-491-4150) and we'll pay to have the tin(s) sent back to us, and we'll give you your money back or, if you'd prefer, give you replacement tin(s) of some other pipe tobacco blend we make.
I can't even begin to tell you how sorry we are, how sorry I am, that this has happened. We've worked so hard over the last few months to strengthen our products all the way through the production chain—evidently we still have work to do.
I hope you'll give us the opportunity to work with you all to correct this mistake. Likewise, I hope that you'll continue to support C&D in the future. It's always been our mission to make quality, natural pipe tobacco that people love. We set high expectations of ourselves and so we'll be the first to own up to our blunders. And this is a blunder, make no mistake. Yes, mold in pipe tobacco can happen, but that's not a good enough excuse. It's not good enough for C&D and it's not good enough for you, our customers.
Sincerely yours,
Jeremy Reeves

Jeremy, you all are much more experienced with dealing with this issue than I am, but I hope you are also looking at the potential (if there is any) of the packaging introducing the mold? I'm thinking the paper inside the tin.

There you have it. Laudisi & Cornell & Diehl making it right for its customers. I have no plans on opening any tins till next year so that adds to the unknown factor of contamination.
Thank you Sykes, Ted and Jeremy!
