Contrary to the OP's opening statement a cob is a "proper pipe" no question about that. Cobs (particularly MM) make a good choice for folks wanting to try pipe smoking, they are reliable well engineered and don't cost much -- hence not much is lost if the a pipe is not to a someones liking. Bones pipes also fit is this category for a well engineered briar pipe that is just a bit more in cost.

Clearly the answer missed here was everything changed when he went from tobacco to "baccy", but the whole thing had kind of a Penthouse Forum vibe to the story and I couldn't focus. ;)

If you read it again you'll see the corn cob pipe is not the problem. The "baccy" didn't smoke well in the locally carved briar pipe which produced dottle and excess moisture. So ...clearly the cobs are the "proper pipe" afterall ... ;)

Just trying to get some answers and have some fun writing both at the same time, so some erotic fanfic vibes may indeed be here.

Cobs generally smoke everything well unless you ghosted it as you indicated. Then clean it. Briars with deep bowls should also smoke everything well. But if you are "chasing that flavor" you are smoking to fast and heating up the tobacco too much and that does effect flavor by lessening it. You are also drawing moisture into the bowl which creates steam and moisture in the bottom. Its counterintuitive but once you light the pipe set it aside for a minute then sip the tobacco lightly. Keep doing light draws instead of heavy draws. You will get more flavor that way. If you need a nicotine hit then take a lozenge or have a cigarrette first as some do. Try to make the tobacco last as long as possible and you will max out flavors.
