Just a footnote: At a whaling museum in New England, an exhibit of possessions in a sea chest included a pipe and tobacco in a drawstring cloth bag, and the pipe was an MM hardwood, which I thought was an appropriate choice. Your basic pipe.
I have and use both. I actually sanded down a MM hardwood, and painted (the OUTSIDE!) with black bed liner for a tough, rustic beater pipe. Even buffed up the ferrule to silver...?
