Hey, cob experts! I recently bought a couple of cobs at a garage sale. One is kind of small and haven't smoked it but a couple of times... It's ok. The other is a large MM churchwarded. I smoked it quite a few times and it smokes well, with a good flavor. The thing is, it also tends to smoke wet toward the bottom of the bowl. Starts to gurgle. I'm smoking rather dry H&H which smokes fine in other pipes. I don't have any real experience with cobs so my question is.... Do cobs all seem to smoke wet like that or is it just mine? puffy
Never had any gurgle with a cob. When I'm smoking on a cold, wet day, I default to a cob because they never gurgle for me like a briar might. Has it been modified, bottom of the chamber filled in with pipe mud or anything like that?

The only cob that ever gurgled on me is the Lucky 7 churchwarden. The demi-churchwarden Shire and Elf have been great. My biggest problem with the 7 is that I feel ridiculously pretentious smoking a churchwarden cob.

I checked and the bowl/draft hole are right so I don't think there is any fill in the bottom. I can't figure it out, but it's no big deal. I still like to smoke it so I'll just ignore an occasional gurgle. puffy

Don’t bother with a pipe made of corn unless you want to deal with the best value in tobacco smoking apparatuses ever known. Your tobacco will never taste like burning wood when you get towards the bottom and you will be tempted to smoke the dang thing repeatedly throughout the day. You don’t need to suffer any of that!

I really enjoy a cob and have several.
If you are curious, get one. A MM Legend is under $10 and a good pipe. I tend to put aromatics, virginias or navy blends in them. My briars I tend to pack with English blends or more Latakia tobacco.

You really can't go wrong with a cob, just to hammer what others have said. They are cheap, they are dependable, have a good open draw, great for clenching and working on whatever whenever, you don't have to worry about banging them up or having dings in them because again, they're cheeeeeeap, you can get cheap after market stems for them as well if you hate the soft plastic that some of them come with (others come with acrylic stems) etc.

You can even mix some cigar ash with water into a thick paste and mortar the bottom of the chamber so they smoke even better (youtube is your friend). I own three cobs, I smoke em a lot in the winter where I am, ya know... when its -30C outside and I am clearing the driveway of snow and don't want to feck up one of my good pipes, occasionally even using a small flame torch lighter when its also windy as much as it is cold.

Cobs are extremely utilitarian even if you prefer the finer briars and meerschaums, it's worth having a few in your stable.

I figured out the gurgling problem. It's not the fact that it's a cob, rather it's a stem problem. First the draft hole where the smoke enters the stem is much too small and second the length of the stem creates a problem. Moisture is condensing in the stem because of the tight entry and the distance it has to travel. I tried the pipe with another, regular length stem and it smoked without gurgle. Mystery solved. puffy
