I echo pretty much everything already said. I have thirteen cobs. My thoughts on the small bowl capacity as well. But if you check the MM site they do make some cobs that have larger capacity bowls. Just check the stats for each pipe. Bowl diameter, bowl depth. I have a Freehand that has a substantially larger bowl as does the general.
I have a 5th Avenue that also has a larger bowl capacity. I haven’t purchased a cob now in several years but mine are all still going strong. Like Newbroom, my first cob was a Legend.

They always strike me as a remnant from a bygone age. Pipes literally grown to satisfy the needs of a continent worth of pipe smokers. Pipes and bacci grown side by side (or thereabouts). Not sure that is where pipe smoking is right now. I do own a country gentleman, but the bowl is too narrow and I can only get about a ten minute smoke from it. On the plus side, it is a nice open draw, and I know the tobacco is finished when I can smell burning smoke from the stem lol.
You must be steam training that pupe. I get 45 minutes to an hour out of smoking my Country Gentleman. The bowl is .75 inches; pretty standard.

Mine doesn't. Must be your technique.
Absolutely it's my technique, what else would it be? My pipe doesn't smoke itself. At times I give it a good hammering, no doubt about it. Other times I'll relax and let it smoulder. Either way CC aren't for me. I can see why workmen use them whilst at work. But I only smoke in the evening when relaxing. I prefer meerschaum.

Are you smoking in windy conditions? I usually get 30-40 minutes from a smaller bowled Legend and some ribbon cut, but a breeze definitely quickens the burn.
It probably lasts more than ten mins, I wasn't being literal. I'll have to dig it out again and fire it up, it seems a popular model.

The quality of cobs can vary drastically. I don’t like the flimsy plastic stems on the cheapest offerings. I prefer the reed stems on the Old Dominion pipes. Very lightweight and easy to clench. I have one of these with a narrow, and somewhat tall bowl. Great for smoking Virginia flake while fishing.

I also don't like the feel of MM's plastic stems, and two of my four MM corncob pipes were manufactured with the stem entering the bowl noticeably off-center. Also, I just happened to learn about Old Dominion corncob pipes the other day, and now after seeing your post, I'm strongly considering getting one!

Which models of Old Dominion corncob pipes do you recommend?

I'm also considering retrofitting a few of my MM pipes with acrylic stems from Vermont Freehand.

Missouri Meerschaum owns Old Dominion.

My favorite is the Laughing King (seen in my photo above), which has a tall, narrow bowl. Unfortunately I haven’t seen these in the past few years. I believe that Old Dominion was bought by Missouri Meerschaum, and there is less variety.

I like the reed stems, which are easily shortened or replaced over time. I do want to start making my own cob pipes (for personal use).

I totally agree about the MM original black plastic stem -- feel like it's going to crack between my teeth.

Funny you mentioned the Vermont Freehand replacement stem, because I just today received mine for my Country Gentleman, and couldn't be happier with it. I also ordered a new metal "ring" in copper, which I think matches the "red/black" stem color pretty nicely. It's a huge upgrade. The end of the bit is nice and wide, and the fit and finish are perfect. I'll know more when I test it out tonight, but the draw is great, so I don't expect any issues.

Going to try to attach a few pics:

Hey, cob experts! I recently bought a couple of cobs at a garage sale. One is kind of small and haven't smoked it but a couple of times... It's ok. The other is a large MM churchwarded. I smoked it quite a few times and it smokes well, with a good flavor. The thing is, it also tends to smoke wet toward the bottom of the bowl. Starts to gurgle. I'm smoking rather dry H&H which smokes fine in other pipes. I don't have any real experience with cobs so my question is.... Do cobs all seem to smoke wet like that or is it just mine? puffy
