Jaysin, that is an excellent question, one that I don't believe has been posed before.
This is how I clean mine.

When I give the tray that it is mounted in a "good" cleaning; I wipe all of the dust off with a dry paper towel.

Then, I'll give the whole thing (tray and all) a good washing down with Rubbing alcohol, using paper towels.

That's what works for me.

As to if they are neccisary I surly would not nap on a glass or porcilan ashtray, too easy to crack the ashtray. You also would never want to tap out a meer on anything but cork or your palm. I just use my pipe tool to get the ashes out, but my dad used alcohol and sometimes a damp scrub brush to clean out the cork.

I drink wine and save the corks. I will toss one in the ash tray and when it gets nasty. Then I toss it and replace it. Then drink more wine and save the cork.

I make it a rule to always browse a thread with knockers in the title. I always tell the significant other I am looking for ashtray parts. :P

And here I was expecting to find a thread from hobie with hot, Irish women from Cork county showing off their ... um... assets.
I'm with tokerpipes thought. I just use my pipe tool to get all of the dottle and ashes out.

I like the idea of using a wine cork. I think I will flatten the bottom of an old Champane cork and give it a try, but I will probably continue to use my pipe tool anyway.
