AMC is showing "Crossfire', with Robert Young playing a homicide detective - from about his "Father Knows Best" days. In one of the movie's early scenes, he's smoking a pipe (a straight briar of some sort). Through the entire scene, his pipe never leaves his mouth and he never reaches up to hold the bowl once in the entire scene.
When I smoke, I constantly take the pipe out of my mouth and hold it, and then put it back in my mouth for a few puffs, and then take it out again, and that goes on until I'm done with that bowl. And then it all starts over again with the next bowl. Even when my pipe is in my mouth, I often just hold the bowl while I'm smoking.
I'm just curious how many folks smoke hands-free like Robert Young, vs. how many are more fidgety with their hands as they smoke??

When I drive I clench the pipe in my teeth because I drive a stick. But when I am not driving I hold the pipe...self aware of putting teeth marks in the stem so I try to prevent it.

I uploaded the clip to YouTube just for the Hell of it (yes, I'm bored).

^ There are a lot of pipe smoking scenes.
BTW, anyone that wants to watch this movie can legally download it in the U.S. from a BitTorrent site as it's now in the public domain. That's why there are clips of it on YouTube that aren't being taken down.
This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1963 and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. Cool thread tpicking and thanks for putting up the clip xray. I love the old classic black and white films. The actors acted and put so much emotion into their parts through facial expression and body language. Good stuff.
I don't clench at all. I can't stand the idea of marring any of my bits. However I do have a cob that I've been walking around with it clenched in my teeth but it still feels weird. It's cool in the movie that he is actually smoking the pipe as wisps of smoke are visible throughout the clip. I'll try downloading it to my Kindle fire it looks like a good movie.

I'm a clencher and that is how it looks. Pipe comes out if I sneeze, drink or cough. Otherwise, it's connected.

Not much clenching more holding and to the mouth for a puff.

That was very impressive. I do clench some, but there's no way I could do it for as long as he did in that scene, while at the same time talking so clearly...and doing it all as effortlessly as he did. I wonder if there are any actors in Hollywood today that could duplicate that.

Depends on my mood and the situation. I don't clench as a rule, but I find it useful in some situations like mowing the grass or working outside
