My pipe smoking ritual consists of myself in an old wing back chair, a trusty briar and my notebook. I write down the day, time weather conditions (if outside), pipe used and tobacco selection. After the initial information I relax and go into my thoughts only writing what may come to me as I enjoy the smoke. It is in fact my daily meditation ritual, my time void of outside stimuli. Just myself, the leaf and the pen.
Really like the idea of writing a smoking journal. Great way to track thoughts of a more peaceful time of the day. Thanks for this. :puffy:

One wonders, when contemplating the joys of smoking a pipe, if the Architect of Middle-Earth, J.R.R. Tolkien, thought up the Hobbits while gazing through wisps of pipe weed emanating from red embers...

Every day on my lunch break after I woof down my sammich I usually have around 45 minutes left to kill. I got outside the main shop over to the "warehouse" where we store all our rarely-used crap. It's quiet, there's usually no one out there, and I have a fairly comfy armchair out there. That's my quietest smoke of the day most days.
When the weather is nice I sometimes sit outside and smoke while doing nothing other than staring into the distance and thinking. But most times I'm busy doing something and usually have a pipe in hand or in clench while doing so.

Although I am new to this venture I have found myself puffing away as I do my homework (37 and still trying to finish college). I have found that when I get frustrated it gives me a quick minute to focus on something else, clear the frustration, and then get back after it. We'll see what happens now that I'm out of school until after the first of year.
In the evenings, after everyone has gone to bed, I'll step out on the front porch and enjoy a bowl and just ponder things. Something about a heavy flannel, nice English blend, and a cool crisp breeze that clears the mind.

It was few days ago I lighted up my pipe and sat, then after 15 minutes I realized that I have been doing nothing but only smoking and thinking, I was I don't know where in my dreams :) I tried to read a book once, however I found it very confusing, I was either reading and forgetting to smoke or smoking and not reading. I think it is something that needs experience level 7895. I usually smoke in the evening after dinner and mostly I am with my Ipad like some of the pipers above. I read news, watch videos on youtube (mostly pipe videos or scenes from movies I have watched before).

I frequently read while smoking, but sometimes it is nice just to sit and enjoy the moment.

I smoke at my desk, usually while on the computer or watching TV. Almost never while reading, for some reason. My favorite activity while smoking a pipe is watching Three Stooges dvds. Ah Curly, ah humanity!

I read outside and smoke a pipe. Sometimes I find a stopping point and finish a pipe in contemplation.

I too at times just sit. During fall I really liked going to this big nice park by me and finding a nice spot (away from the "i don't want cancer from your smoking" people, they've been there...) and get into the nature mind smoking rhythm. Also sometimes low volume non vocal music if not silence. All in all its relaxing. :puffy:

I'm only contemplative when I'm smoking outside, which is very seldom. Usually I'm either on the computer or watching TV while I'm smoking my pipe. One thing I like to do is read the reviews on www.tobaccoreviews.com of the blend I'm smoking at the time. Don't know if that can be contemplative, you decide.

Yes, I like a pipe as an accompaniment to thought. For this, I often don't listen to music, watch TV, or read, etc. It's good to have my own full attention from time to time. I don't always need a soundtrack or someone else's story as a counterpoint. In a household, you sometimes have to tune out other noise, but attending to ones thoughts is often an excellent practice. A pipe can be an unobtrusive help in focusing.

I find myself smoking while accompanying my wife when she's walking the dogs. Conversation is light allowing me to focus on the slow walk and flavor of the bowl. I end up staying on the back porch to finish the smoke. I also like sitting on the back porch during a clear night or with wispy clouds. Sometimes I clear my head and just focus on the old nothing box.

I have been smoking for over a year now, and have found it does help me calm down and think. However as my thoughts progress, I would often find my pipe has gone out. Reading and smoking is something I have not been able to master, as for me, reading is an activity far too preoccupying by itself.

I am normally perusing this site while I smoke. If I am not doing that then I am reading or watching sports. I am always doing something while smoking. I never sit and just contemplate as I would never want to stay in my head that long, it is too scary a place.

Only in the wee hours of the morning when I have that first cup and bowl. My head is still a little foggy from waking and can't fathom reading anything which is what I do any other time. Sometimes I organize my thoughts on what I'm going to do for the day or unfortunately I open up boxes on the shelves in my brain and take those things out and look at them. Too often I shouldn't do that. I have a hard time locking those memories away never to be taken out again. I most definitely do ponder the worlds problems and how to fix them. I'm glad I don't have that job for real.

This morning I lit up a pipe and read this thread. I gave a great deal of thought and contemplation as to my feelings on thinking while smoking. After a few minutes I found myself getting sleepy and so I stopped thinking about thinking which got me thinking about the thoughts I'd thought about, I think. When smoking, I tend to block out the goings-ons around me, but if there aren't any goings ons I tend to get distracted by my thoughts which seem too loud. In summation, when I smoke a contemplative pipe and think, I need stuff happening that I can then block out so that I can quietly think thoughts at a volume relative to my thoughts about the thinking I hope to think. :)
