Having recently relocated (for the winter at least) to North Carolina Ive been going to some local B&M‘s. I heard there was one in Asheville simply called B&B Tobacconists that had this House English called Old Limey Bastard that was a Dunhill match that the famed London Pipe Club approved of. Well I’ve never smoked MM965 and certainly not the Murrays version…But oh man.
When I went to this place the first time they were out of EMP and the gent behind the counter just picks up the phone and calls the blender and asks if there is anything around that will scratch that itch the guy recommends Ashton‘s Consummate Gentleman. I figure hey who am I to argue I”ll check it out. I crack the tin it smells light and sour but here’s the catch, No Orientals with the exception of Latakia of course, Virginia , Maryland, and Burley yes Burley. It’s a great Mild to Medium English for the morning with coffee or afternoon with tea and somehow it scratches that itch with the Lat toward the back of the bus.
So now I’m like what’s with this Old Limey Bastard and I bring up the story and the guy let’s me smell the jar he won’t tell which blend it’s a match for I ask him if there is cavendish in it because it’s reminiscent of Red Raparee so I’m thinking MM965. Mums the word I get an Oz. Thinking he will pull it from the jar and he goes in the back and just starts blending comes out with a bag and a knowing smile. Go home fire it up in a big ol author. There I am Ultimate Smoke mode , so smooth , so cool , I could taste the Va , The Lat and yes mid bowl beautiful Burley. Now I’ve never had MM965, though I have had a tin sitting in the cellar waiting to run out of Red Rapporree. But supposedly this stuff matches the old Murrays version ( but is smoother?) That’s what some say. All I know is I love what burley and Latakia do together mid bowl.
These two especially Old Limey Bastard are in The mix this winter and B&B is a hell of a sweet B&M
