Having recently relocated (for the winter at least) to North Carolina Ive been going to some local B&M‘s. I heard there was one in Asheville simply called B&B Tobacconists that had this House English called Old Limey Bastard that was a Dunhill match that the famed London Pipe Club approved of. Well I’ve never smoked MM965 and certainly not the Murrays version…But oh man.

When I went to this place the first time they were out of EMP and the gent behind the counter just picks up the phone and calls the blender and asks if there is anything around that will scratch that itch the guy recommends Ashton‘s Consummate Gentleman. I figure hey who am I to argue I”ll check it out. I crack the tin it smells light and sour but here’s the catch, No Orientals with the exception of Latakia of course, Virginia , Maryland, and Burley yes Burley. It’s a great Mild to Medium English for the morning with coffee or afternoon with tea and somehow it scratches that itch with the Lat toward the back of the bus.

So now I’m like what’s with this Old Limey Bastard and I bring up the story and the guy let’s me smell the jar he won’t tell which blend it’s a match for I ask him if there is cavendish in it because it’s reminiscent of Red Raparee so I’m thinking MM965. Mums the word I get an Oz. Thinking he will pull it from the jar and he goes in the back and just starts blending comes out with a bag and a knowing smile. Go home fire it up in a big ol author. There I am Ultimate Smoke mode , so smooth , so cool , I could taste the Va , The Lat and yes mid bowl beautiful Burley. Now I’ve never had MM965, though I have had a tin sitting in the cellar waiting to run out of Red Rapporree. But supposedly this stuff matches the old Murrays version ( but is smoother?) That’s what some say. All I know is I love what burley and Latakia do together mid bowl.

These two especially Old Limey Bastard are in The mix this winter and B&B is a hell of a sweet B&M

From my memory, Old Limey Bastard is a stronger/heavier 965. It has a more old tar taste than 965. When you finish a bowl, you know you have smoked a man’s smoke and have grown a few new hairs on your chest.
Yeah on the initial jar note I was thinking it’s a meaner Red Rapporee then upon 3rd toke I was like a meaner Squadron Leader or a slightly less Latakia sans Perique Nightcap. By the 5th toke I quit trying to compare and just enjoyed a beautiful smoke quite surprised by the smoothness of such a full blend…

Old Limey Bastard sounds very interesting. Might have to drive over when I get a chance. Only 3 hrs away, I think.
they have it at 4 noggins but obviously not as fresh. At B&B they are always well stocked on the basics that are coming and going online plus a few rare tins and they have 3 C&D special blends made for them I believe (dont quote me) But it seems much like McCrannies in that they are well respected by blenders they have a few blends on Tobacco Reviews too that are very favorable and plenty of room to smoke and trade lies , apparently chess on Saturdays so I'll be checking that out , hope you make it Old Limey will be waiting

I feel like Consummate Gentleman is one of the most under rated blends. Actually I feel like Ashtons line is under rated. For example Rainy Day isn't a blend I'll buy again but if you like full on aromatics it is great, if you like 100 percent consistency it's that. Not my bag but it does what it does perfectly. Gold Rush is an aromatic on the other end of the spectrum. Just enough added to it that it enhances what the tobacco is doing instead of getting in the way (like a lump of sugar in your Earl Grey).

Yeah there is some serious quality there I noticed from tin note to ash , excited to try their Artisan Blend for a full English. Interesting about the Aromatics as if I ever go there I’ll be looking for quality and full flavor too…

the ones i have tried are great. Rainy day reminds me of a mai tai made with a very peaty whiskey. Complex for an aro and the profile holds from 1st puff to last, so i like it in a smaller pipe cause it gets boring. Gold rush is an all time fav
