Pipe Dreamer and Star Gazer
I am in the minority here, I am sure. I prefer as little nicotine as possible - none would be preferable. I began smoking as a way to spend time with friends at college in between classes. I continued because I have an affinity for nostalgia - my dad is a pipe smoker. I stayed with it because it gave me an excuse to spend time away from others and not be bothered with chores they might otherwise think up for me if they otherwise saw me sitting by myself. Lastly, pipe smoking slows me down and forces me to breath more slowly and take the time I should have been taking along by stopping and smelling the roses - more simply put, enjoying the small moments of life. Plus, I am just fascinated with the whole aspect of pipes, pipe lore, and the various customs that come with it. I'd drink more, but I can't find whiskey that lacks alcohol - something that for me ruins the enjoyment of the drink. As I said, I am in the minority and that's ok. I've never enjoyed drugs - unless of course it is a potent hallucigen capable of flinging me into higher dimensions for conversations with mulitdimensional beings.

Actuarially, I'm dead this year, on average, so I'm off the hook. Props to the insurance industry.

Pretty much 95% of people who speak to me about my pipe smoking do so fondly or positively. Although, I did have a girlfriend who nagged me about my "stinky pipe" and was much concerned about trends and fashions, telling me that smoking of all sorts was no longer cool. Ex-girlfriend, I should say, it's all a long time ago anyway.

I do get the impression, having had a pipeful in a busy area last week, that some people have the look on their face that says "is that still legal?" or "one whiff and I must surely die", have to say.

I think there is a tendency in people where they try to give their vices, obsessions, and other idiosyncrasies a veneer of potency and virtue, at least in their own minds. I've no real evidence to support my assumption save that of the anecdotal variety, but I think most people understand that we are defined, in part, but what we do; so, the temptation to view those things which we do often as being evidence of our good character is great.

This is not to say that pipe smoking is entirely devoid of anything that can promote virtue or happiness in the individual. But a pipe is only likely to encourage serenity and humane feeling for the individual that is both open to and readily seeking such things in the first place. A dickhead with a pipe in his mouth is still a dickhead.

As for those who denigrate those who smoke pipe? Well, for me, part of the fun of this hobby is that it is a vice, so I wouldn't mind someone being prickly about it. That being said, most people that confronted me about it were very polite and largely treated me as a quaint curiosity more than anything.

I’ve never met anyone who’s reacted negatively to my pipe smoking. It’s always been positive or indifferent.
Do you think that is because of the high quality people around which you hang....... or is it your overwhelming charming personality that wins them over in spite of the pipe??? :ROFLMAO:

Kidding, of course.......
