I know this is fictional, but it's clearly based on Professor Tolkien's personal experiences of a certain kind of person who can not only not see the point of pipe-smoking, but who also denigrate it. I think we have all met such folk, found it very hard to like them at all, and on further acquaintance found our suspicious well founded...

"Now because of his dislike and fear, in the later days Saruman avoided Gandalf, and they seldom met, except at the assemblies of the White Council. It was at the great Council held in 2851 that the 'Halflings' leaf' was first spoken of, and the matter was noted with amusement at the time, though it was afterwards remembered in a different light. The Council met in Rivendell, and Gandalf sat apart, silent, but smoking prodigiously (a thing he had never done before on such an occasion), while Saruman spoke against him, and urged that contrary to Gandalf's advice Dol Guldur should not yet be molested. Both the silence and the smoke seemed greatly to annoy Saruman, and before the Council dispersed he said to Gandalf: 'When weighty matters are in debate, Mithrandir, I wonder a little that you should play with your toys of fire and smoke, while others are in earnest speech.'

"But Gandalf laughed, and replied: 'You would not wonder, if you used this herb yourself. You might find that smoke blown out cleared your mind of shadows within. Anyway, it gives patience, to listen to error without anger. But it is not one of my toys. It is an art of the Little People away in the West: merry and worthy folk, though not of much account, perhaps, in your high policies.'

"Saruman was little appeased by this answer (for he hated mockery, however gentle), and he said then coldly: 'You jest, Lord Mithrandir, as is your way. I know well enough that you have become a curious explorer of the small: weeds, wild things, and childish folk. Your time is your own to spend, if you have nothing worthier to do; and your friends you may make as you please. But to me the days are too dark for wanderers' tales, and I have no time for the simples of peasants.'

"Gandalf did not laugh again; and he did not answer, but looking keenly at Saruman he drew on his pipe and sent out a great ring of smoke with many smaller rings that followed it. Then he put up his hand, as if to grasp them, and they vanished. With that he got up and left Saruman without another word; But Saruman stood for some time silent, and his face was dark with doubt and displeasure."

(From "The Hunt for the Ring", Unfinished Tales by J.R.R. Tolkien, edited by Christopher Tolkien)

Perhaps our Middle Earth would be a better place if the councils of the great and the good comprised more pipe smokers?

Just a thought.

Even Saruman couldn't resist smoking some of the best pipe-weed of the South Farthing (hence why Merry and Pippin find some amid the ruins of Isengard after the ents lay seige to it) but he is conspicuously furtive and secretive about it, which (as these details always are) was very intentional by Tolkien. Saruman cannot understand Gandalf's love and interest for the small, wholesome things in life - it is something that troubles him immensely and feeds into his paranoia about Gandalf usurping his position as head of their order. So obsessed with power was Saruman that he was embarassed to show that he, at least latterly, also smoked the halflings' leaf - perhaps he took up smoking to see if there was some power he was missing in the Shire (there was), prefering to sneer rather than show his lack of understanding for why Gandalf saw such value in the power of small, everyday acts of goodness. "It is no bad thing to celebrate a simple life." Perhaps nothing better represents this slower paced, more wholesome and meditative approach to life than pipe smoking

Many years back, I was sitting outside a grocery store smoking my pipe while m'lady was shopping. An old lady walked up to me, and started fake coughing. I said, "You should see a psychiatrist about that fake cough." She looked at me and ran inside.
I LOVE it when someone sees/takes the opportunity to get that 'snappy answer to a stupid question'...so much of life is spent wishing you had of thought of that perfect one liner in the moment!

Doubtful, very doubtful. I know some here believe the pipe has magical properties but, reality puts the lie to such beliefs.

Oh, but it does. It improves thinking as well as concentration and has been shown to briefly improve cognitive reasoning as well as aid the brain into looking for insights that might otherwise have remained hidden without it.

In some cases:

  • Attention
Nicotine can improve attention in smokers and non-smokers. It can also help with sustained attention and motor response.

  • Memory
Nicotine can improve recognition memory, working memory, and episodic memory.

  • Cognitive disorders
Nicotine can help with cognitive impairment caused by diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, schizophrenia, and ADHD.

  • Other conditions
Nicotine can also help with age-related memory impairment, stroke, and autism spectrum disorder.

Nicotine's cognitive-enhancing effects may be due to its role in nicotinic receptors, which are involved in attention and memory. Nicotine can be taken in the form of chewing gum or a transdermal patch. However, nicotine is the main psychoactive component of tobacco, and smoking can impair cognitive performance when tobacco is withdrawn.

No magic there, nicotine just has some pharmaceutical properties.

Oh yes, the psych cases.

I once had a supervisor who would hold his breath and run anytime he was around smoke. One day we were driving to lunch and when he saw someone smoking on the side of the road he started coughing up a storm… we were traveling ~35mph with our windows rolled up.

I've run into anti-smoking zealots in the past. On 1 occasion I was at a conference and had a post-lunch smoke in my car as was my wont. After I returned to my seat a very unpleasant woman in the row in front of me turned around to give me crap because she could smell smoke on me.
