Howdy all,

I pose a question for all of you. If you had to choose between a Peterson Christmas pipe(2016) or a Comoy of comparable price, and or shape which would you choose?
(its an odd question I know.)

It's an odd question because the pipes are somewhat different animals, both traditional, but at different ends of the spectrum. Peterson has done some classics but gets some complaints here about quality control. (I have about seven Petes bought new between five and two years ago, and have not had problems.) Comoy on the other hand has recently moved back to France, if I have the story right, and I feel people who knew the English pipe haven't yet warmed up to the French versions. Both brands make handsome pipes, but each has some detractors, or at least some critics. I'd go with Petes since I know them, but I have often shopped Comoys and think they are attractive pipes, and I have yet to hear any specifics on problems.

I'm not a huge fan of the Christmas pipes by Peterson. I do like their Kapp Royal line, but that's different. I will say I have some great Comoys and think they are progressing well bringing them back from the darker days..

I have a new (well 1 year old) Comoy Pebble Grain in the 80 shape. I love it. I love my Petes too. I would go with either over the new Hardcastles. Every Hardcastle that came into my B&M was drilled by a blindfolded monkey.
But between the Pete and the Comoy, you can't go wrong either way.

I agree. I have both old and new Comoys and like them all. Current production is a good deal for the $$$. I have had good luck with current production Petersons, others not so much.

That's a hard choice. Both make some very classical styles and both have a history. The recent relocation to France for Comoy still has the jury out for deliberation. Pete's have their detractors but I own over twenty and do not have a complaint with their smoking qualities. I'd go with the Pete. If there is a problem they are excellent in their customer service. Anyone that makes as many pipes as they do is certainly going to have an issue or two now and then.

That, for me is the toughest question I've seen posted here. Both makes hold the majority in my collection. I've never had a bad Peterson or a comoys that didn't smoke well.

The equivalent would be to stick me in a room with Christina Hendricks & Pamela Anderson & tell me to choose. It would have to be both, obviously.

So in answer to your question, save up & buy the two of them.

Which Comoy are you referring to? 3 Vintage ones with 3 part stem or the new Cadogan ones? Same for Peterson which shape and era or are you referring to new versions of both?
I am referring to the new versions of both, the new Comoys and the new Petersons.

I haven't smoked/bought one of the newer French made comoys yet, as here in England were still only seeing London made comoys for sale.

You can't go wrong with either, IMO. The only thing I will say is with some Peterson lines, Donegal rocky in particular, they will take longer to 'break in'. Once you've smoked a dozen or so bowls through it, you'll have a sweet tasting briar for years to come!

I've had lots of Petersons, the only decent one, and the only one I still have, is a full-bent non-system. By sheer luck it passes a pipecleaner smoothly, and smokes like a dream. Love the orange-twist stem too. OTOH I have never had a bad Comoy, regardless of origin of manufacture. So I'd take a Comoy in a heartbeat. Peterson, only if I could easily return it. And never a system. They just don't do what they claim, and leave a disgusting sludge to boot if you're not meticulous about cleaning them right after every smoke.
