This is my Kiko I believe was “calcined?”
20-30 bowls of black cav on top of a meerschaum button which turned completely black and condensates still.
Kiko’s were African block meerschaum, it’s always precolored and not nearly as absorbent as Turkish block. African block does not color from smoking.
Makes sense, I think the rim is only darkening from the matches anyways.
Funny you mentioned that, my other meerschaums float this one sinks like a rock. Don’t ask me how I know.
Always go Turkish. These two are light as a feather regardless of how it appears.
mine certainly came with a bunch of scratches nothing major. I figured if I only spent 50 bucks on it a few scratches seemed a fair trade off. haven't found any new ones and I do treat it well but I don't baby the thing.
I told you scuba and pipe smoking is not a good combo, but you had to try it.
Yeah I swear that some you can't see untill either the wax wears off, or the coloring starts.
I certianly buy that. Especially since there were a few is that a scratch or just something that looks like one, oh yeah now that it's colored in I can say it is certainly a scratch.
If you wipe off an estate meer with an alcohol wipe and it looks darker afterwards, would you assume you merely removed an obscuring layer of dust and grime? I’ve observed this a few times.

I wouldn't. If you want the top to be black it can easily be done just by being very generous with a lighter or match when lighting.
Making the meerschaum crackled/calcined/marbled (whatever it can be called), I've never seen naturally occuring, and might just be something artificially made.
I think I’ll save my pipes and reserve my coloring experiments to some meerschaum cigarette holders.
The Van Cleef pipes were and are calcined.
Just smoke them, the coloring takes care of itself without historical myth and dogma.
