That seems to be the accepted mantra, but would a heat gun blow off that coloring or is the meerschaum itself colored?
Pulled the stem and mortis attachment and used a metal rod in the shank to support the strummel - heat gun for 5 min. to slowly heat the entire strummel - no change in coloration...

CShubra...This thread can not move forward without you posting another ....75th bowl picture...we are waiting for it badly...after that we may figure out some new scientific results and keep the debate healthy and in a good spirit
I was traveling and did not get a chance to smoke the pipe. Now that I am back, 75th should happen on the weekend

Did the wax liquefy in the process?

I just can't wait for the weekend to see how that 75th bowl of tobacco worked out on @cshubhra new pipe - I mean compared to watching paint dry this stuff is just riveting my attention. Thinking about it you do get the best coloring results using oily tobacco like G&H twists or plugs as it seems to really hang around compared to some flakes, although I am not a big flake fan.

As a personal commitment to being truly scientific, I have developed a computer model (thanks to a generous grant from @timt ) which proves conclusively that all meer coloring occurs from the inside out. Those still intent on questioning the veracity of this information are only revealing themselves as science deniers.

The raw data is of course proprietary, but will nevertheless, in a gesture of good faith, be released for public scrutiny (in no more than 50 years).

It has picked up some exceptional colors in the shank. Since I am smoking this pipe exclusively, I will smoke all types of tobacco in this. An oily twist is a brilliant idea. I will crack some tomorrow

An unwaxed one will color just fine. Even meerschaum carvers will tell you that the wax is just there to protect the material from minor scratches.
Or hide the scratches..more i am smoking mine and the wax is melting more and more unsanded scratches i am starting to see...and even small holes...seems like it could have been done better for 300$ pipe but well...I enjoy it and it taste extremely good smoking out of it...and mine got exactly 17 bowls and looks about the same as cshubras second picture

Thanks Brian. Thanks for your tireless and courageous work over the last 48 hours. I know it wasn't easy and I tried to get you some help. Bill wouldn't even consider joining the team and insisted that if something isn't done NOW, all of our meers will be fully colored by the year 2050.

Could we just modify that and say that all desirable coloring comes from the inside? I've seen lots of dirty meers!

The current project budget does not allow for any further investigation, but your suggested modification is certainly possible with an injection of cash.

As Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle clearly demonstrates, any outcome is possible with adequate funding.
