does Eau de Colignes differ much from splash 'After shaves?
Aftershaves contain, in addition to perfume, skin-care and moisturizing ingredients. They have less fragrance. Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, and Eau de Parfum are perfume plus alcohol in different proportions. The most concentrated is usually the perfume, which has around 33% perfume.

Fragrances are such a personal thing, and a topic that I deep dove into when I was younger and single. Along the path I learned a great deal about the industry, what worked best ( for me ), and the fairer sex.

Like most I purchased from dept stores as they had the largest selection to choose from. I bought almost all the “name” brands from all the fashion houses and most well-known brands. I learned that the brand at the top of the label means little. The contents within the bottle are all that matters. Quality of ingredients, ingredients used to form the result, and durability ( length the fragrance lasted after application ).

The deeper I dove I found that sticking to a fragrance “house” as opposed to a “fashion” house yielded higher quality goods. Granted some “fashion” houses have offered some great classics. Chanel comes to mind right away.

If you’re ok with falling in with the pack, then purchasing what most others purchase is fine, although in a crowded room you’ll just blend in and not stand out. Here I need to add a caveat. Fragrance application requires understanding. Where to apply and how much, based on the type of fragrance and its “potency”. I’d say that 99% of the time, less is superior. Walking into a room and everyone knows what fragrance you’re wearing is not a good thing. The only people that should know are those that are close enough to hug you. Beyond that, it should be your secret.

Anyway, before this becomes a thesis, the house I prefer now is Floris, based in the UK. They are a fragrance house, creating house blends, plus offering custom blend services.

If you are out and about to look at fragrances, I’ll offer a few tips.

1 – bring your better half. You’re not buying for yourself, but what smells pleasant ( on you ) for them.

2 – never try more than 2 “tests” at a time. 1 light application on each wrist, then wait 20 minutes. Then have your spouse and you smell each wrist. Fragrances have 3 levels. Top, middle, and end. If you apply, smell, and think that’s what you’ll end up with, you are wrong. It requires time to settle in and leave you with the end notes, which is what anyone close will smell.

3 – when “sniffing” the bottles before you, clear your nasal pallet between each “sniff” with coffee beans to cleanse the pallet. After the first 2 or 3, if you don’t, they will all begin to appear similar, and they will begin to blend and offer a false end result.

4 – enjoy the hunt. IF you think pipes and tobacco is a rabbit hole, welcome to the world of fragrances…… it’s much deeper and complex.

I don't use cologne. Worked with too many who bathes in them. Do use aftershave, but they don't last too long. Floris London no. 89, and Acqua di Parma Colonia are two I use. My wife enjoys them. Of course, after breakfast, I do obtain natural tobacco scent all day long.
