Sablebrush,

I completely understand if this is a chore you do not wish to take on, but for those of us who really admire the old Barlings, would you be able to display a few of your favorite pieces for us to drool over? Especially some of the old Family Era pipes.

Again, if this is a hassle, just forget it, but I for one, would love to see them..

Thanks

I have somewhere around 30+ pipes of differing shapes and materials. These have been chosen simply because they appealed to me.
There are certain similarities across my collection.
The majority are bent stem pipes, with apple or brandy shaped bowls. I am trying to eventually acquire an example of most of the classic shapes and a few more meerschaum pipes. I have a fair number of cobs and enjoy smoking them quite often. I would also like to get a few more churchwardens.
I have become enamored of Peterson's rusticated Irish Harp line and am considering collecting the set.
So definitely an "assortment" with a few "collection" goals. puffy

Cheers!

Well, I am struck speechless...... Some of the most beautiful pipes I have ever seen. Such craftsmanship. I really want to thank you for displaying these.

I hope you have these in a display case of some type so that they can be easily seen.

I learned a lot from this, too. Did not know that each Quaint was unique. The size of that magnum was enormous. The workmanship of those wind caps.... unbelievable. I wonder if the windcaps were made unique for each pipe or if they were mass produced?

thanks again,

They were made from castings that were soldered together. Barling's circa 1914 catalog lists six variations from which one could choose, and these would also have been cast in different diameters to fit different chamber sizes. The factory included a foundry and metal works. Let's not forget that the family business was silver smithing before they got into pipes.

It’s posts like yours sets off the rampant PAD
Torn between telling you “cease and desist” or “more please” 😁
There are a few more "special" pipes, but the majority are well used old workhorses. As I wrote, everything is done on a budget. Trust me, there are FAR more fabulous collections out there. I've just been patient, and lucky.
Besides, YOU should talk. You own some Barling's I would LOVE to have.
