Collecting—an Addiction?

An addiction may be strong, but there is something to collecting, researching, pursuing and owning history. Via estate pipes, that is.

While I get my pipes mostly from Hill & Hill Tobacconist in Grosse Pointe Michigan (Jim Simon), I am gaining a good understanding on learning how to identify and select quality estate pipes. Jim has guided me along the way - a true asset to this community.

I started with a billiard made by Wilmer. Within a year I expanded to to about 22 pipes. Almost all estate.

The history, the curing, the tobaccos…all part of a great story and relaxation.

I am truly hooked on pipes (from a long time cigar smoker).

In the simplest of terms this is a forum about nicotine delivery devices - pipes. I have often wondered whether heroin addicts have a syringe forum called 'Syringe Magazine' where they show off their classic glass syringes that come in velvet padded cases and discuss the joys of opening containers of 1920s pharmacy grade drugs and shooting them up. Food for thought!

I've always maintained that 'collecting' was just a nice term for 'addiction'.

But if you aren't hurting anyone, and can stay within what you can afford, go for it.

I’m of the belief that a man has to have a vice! Pipes, Cigars, Golf etc.
I’d say pipe collecting is an addictive behavior but It does beat hookers and blow as the alternative.

I think obsessiveness would fit better than addiction when it comes to purchases. But I'd agree to the tobacco addiction!

I am a long-time collector/accumulator. My first real collection was gravel. I kid you not. As a three year old, I started collecting large crushed stone, what would now be referred to as "#3 clean". I was attracted to the varying patterns and weak points where the stone succumbed to the crusher. Then came sea shells, acorns and fall leaves. Eventually, I moved on to old books and newspapers, vintage tape recorders, military ribbons, WWI web gear, tools, vintage Russian firearms, cameras and other photo equipment. Cigars started in 1993, pipes, lighters and tobacco in 2011. Now, I don't collect anything, except when an unexpected obsession creeps up on me, which I'm usually able to arrest before it does any lasting economic damage. Case in point, right now I'm working on replacing and running new propane service lines and fell down the rabbit hole of plumbing tools and fittings used for iron pipe construction. If anyone needs to borrow anything used for running 1-1/4" gas pipe, just let me know, I got what you need.






Oh, yeah.
I used to collect vintage printing stuff. Anyone need a 35-year service pin from the Linotype Operator’s Union?

I know it’s not an addiction because I routinely pass on pipes I want that have prices I don’t like. I’m okay with the word obsession though.
