Just jab the pipe down into some pipe insulation and run a few layers of duct tap around it. Good to go.

You can get some bad splinters from that asbestos around your pipe.

Like OP, I smoke during my morning commute, usually leave the pipe in the car, and smoke it on the way home again. In the winter, day temps are typically in the mid 30's to 40's Fahrenheit here in the DC metro area. I've never had an issue with the pipe or condensation.

Never thought about the bowl cracking, I guess that might be a thing. The only problem I've noticed, and only with some of my pipes, is that after a day in the car in below freezing temps while I'm in the office, the stems can be very loose til they warm up a bit. I have one Rossi that gets so loose it'll just come apart at a touch.
