During the early stages of my pipe smoking I posted here frequently. I am truly joyed at the prospects that some of my briar forum mentors may remember who I am and if not thats ok too. Six years in and in some ways I still consider myself new to the hobby. I could easily make this post about when a smoker leaves behind novice status and joins the ranks of a seasoned Condor Codgers but instead I will ask a simple worn out question; how hot do you let your pipe get?

I know, I know, just about everyone here blows ice cold blue smoke rings through to white ash. For the rest of us mortals we have some honing to do. By no means do I think I smoke hot. My mouth hasn't suffered a newbie's cadence or the flavors of furnace vaporized Virginia's for years. I do find myself concerned by the warmth of my pipe though.

While smoking I find that my pipes grow warm in my hand. I know the old trick, hold them to your cheek or lips and see if it grows too hot over 3-5 seconds. They don't. I am reassured...sorta. I find that if I trade the pipe to my non-typical smoking hand and the pipe feels fine. I even go as far sometimes as to stick my finger in the chamber immediately after my smoke. Slightly warm but not near as concerning as before.

So here is my question, how warm does your pipe get while smoking? Do you find that it feels much hotter if the pipe sits in the same place in your hand over a period of time? Am I going a little nuts here? I love my pipes and just got done smoking the one featured here. I don't want to screw them up and have no evidence that I am except for the suspicious and slightly unnerving sensation in my hand.

You really have to be trying to damage your pipes to cause any harm. Some of the worst looking pipes dropped in my lap have been restored to near new condition.

After thirty years my pipes aren't even noticeably warm any more. Even when smoking my wife can only tell I have a pipe lit by the smell as I produce little to no smoke, only fine wisps. Smoke slow and keep the pipe cool. If it heats up while smoking slowly, it may need more breaking in.

@chasingembers in the third pic what did you use to clean the gunk and tar off the rim? I am cleaning up my rusticated Savinelli that I let go too far - I've reamed it and cleaned everything but there's still some stubborn tar caught in the rustication on the rim.

I often smoke my pipe while playing video games on my tablet and if I'm getting into the game my cadence can ramp up a little too much and the bowl can get a tad hotter than I'd like.

One benefit of a warm bowl is it soothes the arthritis in my hand a little. When the cold weather comes rolling around I think doctors should start prescribing a pouch of Ennerdale Flake as an alternative to ibuprofen gel.

Saliva and a paper towel.

Some of my lightweight pipes will get hot occasionally. When it happens, I just sit them down for a couple of minutes. I don't really worry about the pipes, but IME the tobacco can get harsh and moist if it is smoked too hot.
When everything works as it should, and it most often does, the pipe only gets lukewarm.

A little bit of hand sanitizer can work some magic too. Not enough alcohol to cause any problems. Seems like i read that on a smoking pipes.com daily reader about tips they use to restore estate pipes. Just smear some on and let it sit for a minute then wipe it off. Repeat as necessary.

I tried this and it worked like a charm! The rim is a bit lighter than the rest of the bowl now but I think that’s down to dirt accumulated from handling - I have some polish on the way and will try and get it sparking.

I do notice changing hand makes the pipe feel less warm. I just thought my left hand was messed up. I really haven't heat up the pipe to be concerned about in awhile. But all, well all the ones I currently smoke, don't really get that hot any more. Maybe the pipes are breaking in or I've slowed down.

The alcohol from the hand sanitizer lifted some of the stain. Tried hand sanitizer once and it wrecked the stain. Not doing that again.
