This question goes out to anyone who lives in a cold climate and can't smoke inside. How do you do it? Do you suffer through the cold or suffer the months without a smoke? I ask this because I think it has finally hit a temp here that will be pushing my limits. It dropped below 40 tonight, and any colder I don't know if I would want to be outside.

It doesn't get really cold here. When the weather gets really nasty I just stick my head out the companionway.

Ah, but there lies the problem marmal4de, I unfortunatly still live at home(although me and SWMBO are looking at houses) and I have been FORBIDEN to smoke inside, so that is not an option right now. Now once the two of us do find a place, she told me she could settle for me smoking indoors when it gets cold. I just don't really see myself standing outside when it's 0 degrees smoking my pipe.

Maybe get a room divider from ikea, and set it up against the patio door and run an extension cable with a small space heater inside it, it'd be an easily set up and taken down smoking shelter.

Before I was allowed inside I froze outside on the balcony. I don't miss those days at all.

Have a truck or car? BOOM.

If you have a truck, you can even set up a man-cave in the bed, with some two by fours, an AC converter, and a space heater.

Bundle up if you can't smoke inside. Up North, we aren't allowed to smoke in the camps. Commonly, the smoke shacks are across the pad which is a major inconvenience at -40. I smoke outside as long as the wind isn't too strong. Otherwise, I hole up in a work truck and enjoy my pipe.

sorry to thread hi jack, but marmal4de, do you have one of the lampe berger? and if so, how well does it work? like well enough where if I smoked inside my rented condo I wouldn't forever say goodbye to my deposit?

I grew up in Minnesota. So, I can be seen in shorts and a hoodie in January with the temperature somewhere around zero smoking a pipe without a care. If you weren't born into it... you can never really become used to it. Just dress in layers and carry a hankie to blow your nose.

i sympathise- last winter here we were getting down as low as -22C during the day (-4F) which is shockingly cold for a place where winter rarely gets below about -10C (14 F or so) even on the coldest nights. I found the only way to smoke outside was to be doing something while I smoke (shovelling snow, walking, etc.) and of course it was much more bearable if it was a very dry still day too..somehow the cold doesnt penetrate....and as the folk above have said, if you can smoke in your car then do it!

Holy snapping duck poo, I have never in my life experienced a temperature in the minus range, despite having travelled the world a couple of times, and if I did, I am certain I would die - our temp here in the dead of winter is 25C by noon and we all get around in t-shirts.
If someone even attempted to tell me I couldn't smoke inside under my own roof when the temp outside was inhuman, I'd tell them to find an alternative abode until it warmed up sufficiently for me to go back outside. Pfft, what are you, men or mice?

We can go srtaight from the kitchen door to the garage where the people cave is and we have a convector heater there. It doesn't get that cold here in Cornwall compared to some places but the heater comes in handy in the winter. Both myself and SWMBO go out there. The grandchilderen are here quite a lot and the house is smoke free for their benefit.

I don't smoke inside because I hate the smell of a smelly home, or really stinky enclosed area. I can smoke in my garage/workshop when it is cold, it is heated/insulated. I still prefer smoking out of doors, but when it is cold and windy, I just don't to this point. It's just not enjoyable for any length of time and I feel like those folks smoking cigarettes in 20 degree weather out in the street, ie like an animal. The colder weather has definitely cut down on my smoking, well, all the more to look forward to in the Spring, which seems like a long way off.

I smoke in an insulated garage that's kept relatively warm by the water heater in the corner. We just had an insulated garage door installed and it was worth every penny.
