I swapped from a Fellow Ode to the Baratza with an upgraded bur and couldn't be happier.

You can buy replacement burrs that have differing "teeth" profiles, etc. Some are designed for filter coffee, vs espresso

I love it. Perfect grinds for my daily V60 and does espresso better than my Ode did. It's pretty quiet also which is a plus. The burr upgrade option really sold me on it also.

Replacement stainless steel Preciso inner burr that comes standard on Virtuoso grinders. Can also be used to upgrade the burr on the Encore.

What are the advantages of the upgraded burr?

It's up for debate how much it improves the Baratza. I think I get a more consistent grind with less fines in it now. Less channeling in my V60 but I don't know that I can credit that to the new burr. Consistency would help this aspect.
Was it worth it? I think so. Is it necessary? No, I don't think so. The Barazta is a fine unit straight from the box

Baratza Encore for us. Just because you can spend obscene amounts of money on a burr grinder doesn't mean you have to.

No, I didn't have to, but I wanted to spend less time measuring out doses and more time refining the pull time.
