Codgers: Tubs or Jars

I have some SWRA open in a unsealed tub that seems to be holding its flavor and moisture. It will probably take me another two years to finish it.

Do codgers store long term in tubs ok or should I jar it?

I have 5 tubs that have been open for three years. SWRA, SWR, Grainger, LLRR and EGR. SWR is the only blend that has shown significant drying. I would say it has lost 50% of its moisture. SWRA no more than 10%. All the others are the same as the day I opened them. Of course this is my experience. I would use a jar if you are concerned. SWRA isn't exactly cheap.

I would agree. My SWRA is down about 10% in moisture and topping smell.

Wonder why plain old SWR is the only one to significantly dry out?

Probably less PG in the processing, which is fine with me.

Best practice is, of course, a jar. However, in my experience most tub tobacco stores fine in its tub, so long as you are smoking it regularly, even if it takes a year or two.

Tubs are pretty magical at keeping tobacco fresh for long periods.

@JimInks wrote about his process for tubs, which I believe involves keeping the foil wrapper on only to the extent necessary to access the leaf.

Tub or pouch they came in. Tub doesn't seem to dry out, and even dry tobacco in the pouch is very smokable. Some kinda magic.

I wouldn't sweat it either way. The tubs have served me well, especially the screw-down types. If you're a slow user, you might notice the last half inch or so being drier than it was when you started. I'm stubborn about using the tubs, because of their easy access for loading.

I have a few kilos of tobacco in glass jars, sealed with Teflon impossible to open the damn jar. I think I'll smoke it later

You could always drop a 58% Boveda pouch in there. It's good insurance, and if you feel the pouch getting gritty, you know it is starting to dry out.

All of my Codger blends are still in the tubs and have been for 4 or 5 years. Their still smokeable and have dried some which I prefer. The best tubs for storage are the John Middleton tubs like the ones that Prince Albert & Carter Hall come in. I even store some of my non-Codger blends in the Middleton tubs.

I used to split up the tubs into jars, but now that they are smaller (for SWRA at least) I don't worry about it,

Keep on keeping on in the tub if you like it.

If I have anything open for a month, it goes in the jar.

Tubs are fine and in fact most of the blends in tubs (SWRA included) smoke better after being opened and left in the tub for a few weeks/months.

@ParkitoATL be careful with boveda packs this isn’t ganja or cigars. You can easily develop mold with too much humidity.

I've always used 62-65% for cigars and 58% for pipe tobacco and have never had mold. Mold is really only a problem above 70%.

Middleton tubs are g2g for at least a few years as long as you press down on the center a few times to seal it. I would not trust the peanut cans like STG uses to keep the contents fresh for that long.

Yes, jarring is preferred; but, thankfully, John Middleton Company uses those fantastic 'Sta-Fresh' tubs, WHICH DO!

I've a tub of Carter Hall that I'm certain is pushing 3 years now and I see 0% change in it. I live in a humid climate but that lid fits pretty darn tight and I see no issues.
