This has probably been asked before but how long can a person expect a cob to last with just basic care? I am thinking about getting a few to add to rotation but have never owned one.
There are members here with cobs that have lasted not just years, but decades.
@mikethompson has put one on his roof for a 6month (all weather) torture test
So, provided you don’t get a dud one, and it is not abused, you should get your moneys worth

Not all that long if you smoke them hard.

These stories of really old cobs are from people who don't smoke them all the time.

Good news is that they're cheap enough to toss and buy a new one, when the time comes.

Forever is absolutely not the answer.

Some people on this forum smoke through a rotation of 100 pipes and only smoke 10 bowls a year... They don't even build cake.

These have had near daily use for over 5 years, often are smoked multiple times a dayIMG_1535.jpeg

Noice!

I'm glad youre enjoying your pipes. As I said before, they won't last forever.

I just lit an old one I have, about 5 years old, smoked regularly for about 4 years. It taste pretty shot out, to be honest.

I like cobs, I own 20 or so. But, they are disposable items, IMHO.

Starting to Get Obsessed
Great answers and pics! Cobs don't last long for me because I smoke them in harsher environments than more expensive pipes. But I'm of the opinion that $11 for a descent cob it's justified. They're disposable to me, and that gives me an excuse to smoke them a lot harder. The more aggressively I smoke them, the better they are, but that might just me.

I can't tell you how long it takes to wear one out. I have one 5 years old. But I've lost or destroyed several over the years. I mean, a cob is what I'm grabbing if I want to smoke while doing something dangerous to the pipe. I've lost them in the Chesapeake and Atlantic and the mid Atlantic forests. I've run over them with a lawnmower and cut one with a Sawzall.

If you take care of them, there's no reason to think it won't last your lifetime. If you dog it, it'll die quicker. If you're like me, who knows?
