I'm actually working on keeping the bowl cooler during smokes. If it gets too hot I'll usually dump the ash and let it put itself out. Then I'll wait until it's considerably cooler to the touch and start it up again. The breath technique has helped a lot and not worrying about if I'm getting billowing clouds of smoke or not has also helped keep the temperature down. I have noticed a relight a bit more often, but I like the trade off of the briar staying cooler.
