+1 on the cob. I started with one, a legend, and still smoke it along with several of its family. Probably half the time I'm smoking I'm using a cob. They work great. They don't cost much.

The title of this thread is misleading. I was expecting to read about what a cob thought, not what you thought of cobs. However, while wondering what a cob thought, I wandered into thoughts on cobs which made me think what can only be described as cob thoughts. Concerning cobs, and after some thought, I may have made a rush to judgement. If cob thoughts are anywhere near as remarkable as your thoughts on cobs... Perhaps I should just smoke a cob.

I love my cobs. I smoke a cob at least once a week, (on Cob Tuesday) and whenever I feel like enjoying one. I have 9 cobs I smoke regularly. 1 Diplomat, 1 Country Gentleman, 1 General, 1 5th Avenue, 1 Great Dane Egg, 1 Washington, 2 Rob Roy Legends, and 2 Morgans. I have another Rob Roy Legend that hasn't been smoked yet and a Hardwood Diplomat to go along with those. I've never had an issue with smoking a cob, and I use them in my go-bag, so if something does happen to them I'm not out an expensive briar. For the cost you can' go wrong with a corn cob pipe.

Love them. I have a cache of MMs that serve as driving pipes, work pipes, fishing pipes, you name it. They smoke great, clench like a feather, and are dirt cheap (usually), and smoke just fine without a filter. Can't beat the cost to quality ratio.

I'm a clencher too so I don't smoke a pipe cob or otherwise without a softy.

I was a reluctant cob smoker.... but, once I gave into the dark side, I confirmed that they can, indeed, produce a dry, pleasant smoke.
Personally, I'm a fan of the MM freehand. I prefer larger bowls, because I have massive paws for hands -- and the bits on the freehand are also sturdier. However, I'll also keep a couple Mark Twains around, for when I'm looking for a quicker smoke, or just running around the yard. But there's just something about those cob freehands that make burley and cigar leaf sing.
I'm a convert, "Hallelujah!"

I have at least 1 of every model MM has made since 1975.
Here are my thoughts on MMs:
My Missouri Meerschaums
Smoking a pipe may not be your thing

A bad habit, you say, to which I must cling.

It's not socially-acceptable, a political faux pas

But to all that drivel, I must say, "Baaah!"
My pipes are my friends. They are always there

Even in bad times, when no one else cares.

When pondering the scope and meaning of life,

They've helped me to weather the times of strife.
They help me stay cool when morons abound,

And there's no one but fools and idiots around.

They turn my thoughts inward, where they really belong,

They keep my mind and spirit active and strong.
There are those who smoke briars. Quite a large mob,

But I prefer the simplicity of the lowly cob.

From this humble remnant of a piece of corn,

With Virginia and Burley, true art is born.
The natural sweetness and smoothness of draw,

Never ceases to fill me with awe.

Inexpensive, handy, and oh so good,

More depth of character than one made of wood.
To the Diplomat, the Legend, and the Great Dane,

The Mac, the Washington, and the Mark Twain.

To Missouri Meerschaum, kudos to you,

To all of your pipes, both old and new.

I'll bet the folks at the Missouri Meerschaum Factory office would LOVE to have a copy of that poetic ditty. Maybe they already do?

I will buy a cob when I'm looking to try a new blend. So when I buy a tin of new leaf I'll get them to throw in a cob for me too so that I can try it in a raw pipe. Then I find that my Cobs get left on my work bench or tackle box. About once a month I have to cruise around the house and garage to get them all dumped out and stems cleaned up..My good briar or morta pipes are more for when I'm sitting down at the local B&M or when I'm not risking damage or lose.
