Cob Filters. Do You Toss Yours?

The first thing I do when I get a new MM cob is pull out the filter and throw it away. I’ve never even smoked one with the filter in place. The draw is a little looser, but you learn to adjust your smoking accordingly. Anyone keep theirs? Just curious.

I replace it with a balsa filter...I use filters in all my pipes.

When I did use filters, I'd toss them after 2 smokes. I no longer use filters because I found long ago that I like more of an open draw and I was getting more of a nicotine hit without the filter.

When I first bought the balsa filters for my Grabow, I only had a ten pack or whatever. So I left them out to dry, and reused them over and over till they shrunk, and we're black. Now I have a box of 100, and I don't have to do that any more. I toss them.

However, paper filters I would never keep. I would never even use them, that's just gross to me.

I also throw away and use balsa instead, although I've smoked my MM Legend many times without the filter and didn't have any issues.

I toss the filter after it clogs a bit. It helps a little with those first, less than stellar, smokes in a cob.
After that, no filter. I much prefer the looser draw.

I don’t know if you’re kidding about the “place holder” thing or not, but I always thought that was a paper filter. Like I said, I always pull the stem and throw that paper away anyway.

Nope, not kidding. Just a rolled up piece of thin cardboard. Many would replace them with grabow filters.

I don't use filters much at all, but I don't toss them out of hand. Might be useful if you are smoking way more than usual, like at a pipe club or pipe show, trying lots of samples, or if you want a really strong blend tuned down a bit (I never seem to reach that place). If you like/want filters, no shame in that. None of my cobs have them.

No, certainly no shame in using them if that’s what one likes to do. They just always seemed unnecessary for my particular tastes/needs.

ALWAYS use a filter on filtered cobs. I prefer balsa.

I use Savinelli balsa filters in my cobs. I find them useful when out for a walk with the pup, no futzing with cleaners on a cool day.

I don't use them. I've never tried the Balsa filters, but I have tried the ones that the cobs come with. I can't see much benefit in those.. I also want to keep things as simple as possible, don't want anything else to keep up with.
