I don't think we have any active Indonesian members on this forum, but I wonder if the Malaysians and Singaporeans here have come across Indonesian pipe tobacco with cloves added. @tklee @rmatuag @davidsaulmarshall have you?
Eeeee...... I smoked a kretek cigarette before, is it the same with gudang garam? It's really very not nice to smoke ?

Errr...... Not that I know of. I don't think there's pipe tobacco with cloves added, coz it's really not popular here, and not really many people preference.

After the ban I would order cartons of my beloved Djarum Super and Dji Sam Soe direct from Indonesia.
after a couple years of that my luck ran out.

to this day I still grind my own cloves (Madagascar and Ceylon) to add to the cigarettes I make. Tobacco wise I use a blend of the Sutliff bright Virginia ribbon and blended Turkish ribbon. They aren't quite the same as I don't use a "sauce" but I like them.

I've never tasted clove in any of the aforementioned pipe tobaccos. Suppose my palette is used to a bit more.

Haha, Gudang Garam is a brand of kretek. Very popular in Indonesia; they like their rokok with bunga cengkih!

Clove cigs originated in Indonesian and are generically called kretek there. The Javanese guy who invented them supposedly did it to alleviate smoker's hack! I liked them when I use to smoke cigs though I did not smoke them regularly. The paper is infused with something sweet and the smoke crackles from the burning cloves. The smoke also numbs your mouth. There is definitely tobacco in them. As I understand it, some of the the manufacturers have circumvented the ban in the US by making them into little cigars, supposedly not as strong as the cigs.

Besides Bosun Cut Plug and Bosun Plug, RB Plug also has cloves. However, as far as I can tell, GH and SG use clove essence rather than the actual ground up spice. These Kendal products also have a lot of other flavors added as well, so the clove in them is nowhere as prominent as in the Indonesian cigs.

During my undergraduate years, I started with cigarettes and kreteks and Black Sobranies (when I could afford them) were an affectation.
The little bits of cloves often exploded. You can always tell a kreteks smoker by the little burn holes on their shirts and neckties ?
The tobacco was likely local - Indonesia was a significant tobacco producer (as in Sumatra leaf for cigars) and supplier to the Dutch tobacco industry.

Have you tried any Indonesian pipe tobacco? They were a bit if a rage here a few years ago when people were selling them on FB etc. I've not had any myself, but palm sugar casing sounds a bit delicious to me.

No, I haven't.

When I was in Bali a few years ago I tried a selection of Indonesian leaf cigars. I still have a few (looks to be machine-made "dry" cigars), purportedly grown and rolled in Bali. I've smoked all the hand-rolled ones. I found them interesting but won't go out of my way to buy more.

I was not smoking pipes then.

I have friends with family in Indonesia. I should see if I can source some Indonesian blends. I love palm sugar (gula Melaka) ?

Milan Tobacco in Roanoke had a clove scented mixture, circa 1978, if memory serves. I used to stop there on my way to Florida. I find the scent pleasantly exotic, but it clings to everything. My understanding is that patchouli tobacco is also rarely found--although I once knew a habitually unwashed hippie who I know damn well would have smoked it. Each to his own, and non gustibus something, etc.
