So what's the best way to get that filter hull out? And I presume the screen should go back in too even if I dont put a new filter in the mortise, right?

Per advice from RustyPyles CPG and Coreios, I put the pipe in the freezer, then using needlenose pliers I was able to pull the tenon out of the Mortise which allowed me to completely clean out the shank. There was a small white hard cylinder which I presume was the last remnant of the 9mm filter. I was able to reseat the tenon back into the stem and then reinsert it into the mortise sans filter.
Before this process, I was clueless about pipe part components, cleaning, maintenance, etc. Going forward after each monthly use at our neighborhood Beer & Cigar club meetings where I smoke it, I will be cleaning the pipe to keep it in good working order.
Thank you for everyone's help, suggestions, pictures, explanations, etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Success. I used a sewing needle to get the screen out. Then I was able to pull all the gunk out behind it as shown in the picture. My poker goes through to the bowl and I can now draw air through it but it almost feels like there's something else in there. Is there a filter in there in addition to the screen I pulled out? If so, how do I get the "filter out? Is it necessary to put the screen back in?
Wait i did something right ... hold on calling family members!

Glad that at least started your process for you.

Nice work, you'll likely enjoy that pipe a lot more sans filter, it'll be way easier to clean.
