So you leave some marks on the stem, it's going to be ok. unless its a show piece.....pipes are tools.

I agree with tanless. Pipes with a military bit like my Petersons are great, even if you broke the stem you can replace it. The stem doesn't need to be fitted.

I too am a clencher, as I like to do things while I'm smoking. And I've got a snaggle tooth that plays havoc with my vulcanite stems, but I've never had any issue with acrylics.

I am not usually a clencher. I have an Italian no-name bent that I like to smoke at work that has an acrylic stem. Someone had left a football in the warehouse and a coworker and I started tossing it around. I was foolish enough to keep smoking my pipe while we were passing. I used to run with scissors a lot when I was a kid so I didn't think too much about it. After 20 minutes I think every muscle in my face was aching from clenching so hard, but there wasn't one tooth mark on the stem. I was very surprised.

I am a clench my pipes also. I worried about teeth marks at the beginning then I realized they are my pipes and will not be selling them. So some chatter on the stems show some character on my pipes. I tried the rubber bits also but I felt the rubber conflicted with the taste of the tobacco.

I don't mind a few teeth marks, I just don't want to wear through the stem and have to send it out for replacement down the road..
