Starting to Get Obsessed
It's especially chronic with bent pipes.
Ok, I am sooo glad I am not the only one! I got my first bent pipe as a gift a month ago, a very nice meerschaum eagle claw. And I really enjoy smoking it, but YES I drool when I smoke it. Drooling is rarely a problem for me with a straight pipe, although it is more so with my Savinelli XL. With this post, I am starting to think it is the pressure on my lower jaw from the bent pipes or the XL straight that causes it. Which is too bad, because other than the drooling, I find the bent pipe much more comfortable and easy to clench.

I also made the VERY BAD mistake of trying to drain the spittle by turning the pipe with the stem down... and then put it back in my mouth. The sour crap I got nearly made me lose my lunch all over the very nice beach I was sitting on!

I agree with Chopper, drooling on a beard is very very not cool; but yacking on the beach is even worse.

I too am a "wet smoker," which is why I always have pipe cleaners on hand when smoking. I have to run a pipe cleaner through the pipe multiple times during a smoke if I'm clenching. If I'm not clenching I rarely have to use a pipe cleaner during the smoke. I also notice it more with my bent pipes as compared to my straight pipes.

Lady-like Gentlemen, turn back now.

Am I an anatomical anomaly, or does anyone else have a hard time clenching for more than a minute or so without needing to remove your pipe and do something with the pool of drool that accumulates in your mouth, around the bit, threatening to leak out?

I want so bad to be able to clench all day, in hands-free, codgeresque bliss. But between a random gag reflex, and the over-production of saliva when clenching, I feel as if I'll never be a true codger. ☹️

Drooling while pressing your teeth together is a normal reaction a reflexive thing, according to food intake, you can’t do much about it,m, when it happens. It’s a sign of health. Maybe you can swallow your spit from time to time.

I love this kind of information

When I first started really clenching a pipe I noticed this tendency but as I clench more and more now I find it has mostly gone away. But it was really bad the first times I tried clenching, it almost made me quit trying. I'd keep at clenching, try as long as you can before the moisture builds up and switch to holding your pipe. Being able to clench and smoke a whole pipeful is definitely a very valuable skill. To have your hands free and be able to do other tasks while puffing gently and contentedly on a pipe is great for me since I can smoke in my own shop while i work .

I am a wet smoker too that's why I try take off the pipe every time after puffing.

I am glad to see I am not alone and some people have the experience that the drooling problem may go away.

Big time, it's happening right now. It's another entire struggle to focus on, keeps me busy. But I only came over here because I thought you were trying to steal my new screen name.

Same issue here. Its annoying when you have a pipe in your mouth and need both hands for something.

I surmise saliva build-up is the body's mistaken idea that oral stimulation usually means food, hence the moisture. I don't clench for long periods, usually just to light up and moments when I am smoking and need both hands. I find it more relaxing to have the pipe in hand quite a bit. More appetizing too.

As a result, I am a fairly dry smoker. Only a small portion of the moisture from my pipes is saliva; most is from combustion. But I am aware of the problem. Smoking seated with pipe in hand works best for me. I don't go out and about much with my pipe. People who know me for years don't know that I smoke a pipe, though some are tickled to learn this, if they do.

This was never an issue for me until very recently.
I've noticed the more acute the bend of a pipe, the more drool - only when clenching of course.

for me I found that once I started smoking cooler that the drool stopped. It can be caused by a few things. One you may just enjoy the taste and your body says good taste equals yummy food start the drool. Or it could be that you are smoking too hot (going to be different temps for different people) and you are drooling to protect the mouth from burning. Also some blends make me drool and they're usually the kind that mildly irritate my mouth.

Same here.

OP, it's a physiological response. It's kind of like sweating: pretty much everyone sweats, but some more so than others. I just don't clench for overly long periods of time. Which is mostly find by me; the tactile part of smoking a pipe is, for me at least, part of the joy, so being a wet smoker has not really impeded my enjoyment of the pipe too awfully much.

Also a wet smoker. That may change in the future as my pipe smoking becomes more second nature. But for now, I've just accepted that every so often I have to take the pipe out. For me, it's not a big deal.
