You are not supposed to store your pipe in a bag or other container. The pipe has to be in a rack so it can air out. All of my pipes are in either a pipe cabinet with holes in the sides or in a smaller round rack that sits nexxt to my cabinet.

I think this is exactly where I went wrong. It was in the bag after a ~24-36hr air out. I need to get a rack or cabinet! Anyone have suggestions for a decently priced rack/cabinet that would work with freehand pipes?

No idea without knowing where you live, but in the meantime, most drawers allow plenty of air circulation, and so keep your pipes there.
If the bottom of the bowl is quite wet after a smoke, your tobacco going in needs to be dried more before loading.
