Are they in unsmokable condition?

It’s been quite awhile since I looked at them or handled them. There are only two pipes as I recall. One is a Barling Challenger (late ’60s or early ’70s—I could very well still have the blue and white box it came in that he used to hold spare change); I don’t remember what the other pipe might be. They’re very likely smokable.

Can you find the happy medium and leave them as is and smoke it? Or maybe just do a functional, non-cosmetic cleaning just to have it smoking a bit better (sanitize, remove some cake if that’s an issue, etc.)?

That’s a possibility. I’m pretty sure I have his pipe tool in its plastic sleeve in a drawer. I might even have his black and white tin of Borkum Riff, which might have some dessicated tobacco in it. It could be fun to use all the items for a celebratory session to my father at some point.

Yes, that sounds really wonderful! Let us know if you end up doing it.

Stay tuned folks - DubinPiper90 sent me this Peterson, and I just finished it. I'll do a blog entry about the pipe and restoration on the Reborn Pipes site, and post to the British section here. I'm very pleased on how it turned out!
Looking forward to it!
