Took a chance on a 10 dollar Dr. Grabow Grand Duke. Stem was stuck, fixed that, scraped off the rest of the finish. I used water to stain the outside of the bowl after I did a salt cleaning inside. Then Waxed it.
I was shocked at how good a water stain looks. Thought I'd share it.
You should be very proud of that pipe!! Guys have boo-ed using water between sanding to raise the grain on briar. IMO, they’re dead wrong. Can make all the difference, as you have discovered.
I frequently use an old electric toothbrush and liquid soap to scrub up old estates to get rid of decades of grime.
Then apply a propriety briar balm and polish with Micromesh pads
