I wouldn't mark a seller down for not cleaning it enough, a lot of the time their standards are just different from yours. I think the important part is that you get a pipe that doesn't have anything wrong with it (besides what is stated), other than cleanliness, a few pipe cleaners and cheap alcohol never hurt anyone.

I completely agree. I just find it amusing to read the description and then see the photos, as I referenced in the beginning of this thread. I mean come on: surely he saw his own photo and thought "that is clean and sterile!" ROFLOL

Yes, very different standards. I don't even pay attention to the descriptions on the 'bay and let the pictures speak for themselves. The only time I get scandalized is when a pipe is listed as "unsmoked" yet the pictures clearly show the bowl has seen some tobacco combustion at some point in its life, and the seller , when called upon, responds with "well, I didn't smoke it" 8O

Yeah, the eBay written descriptions are generally useless, unless they are there to point out something in one of the photos. I have no expectations as to cleanliness when I buy a pipe on eBay. I just find it humorous when a seller states "clean and ready to smoke" instead of just "used."
And I have gone through another similar cleaning session and it's still not quite clean. I'm gonna need another bottle of Everclear soon.

I guess I've been pretty lucky with ebay sellers, keeping away from the mentioned 'frauds' listed on the forum over the past year.
Still, I've come across a pipe or two that needed some loving treatment before lighting a match to it... No big deal, but the one Greg mentioned is ridiculous. :)
As mentioned earlier, I've noticed that fleabay prices are somewhat higher than a few months ago. What's going on?

@ tuold - How does that Ropp smoke? It looks like a nice pipe.
I bought a Chacom on ebay that was shined and reamed beautifully. The inside of the stem was filthy.
I've stopped mining ebay for pipes. There is so much junk to sift through and everyone thinks their cracked Dunhill is worth $500.
