They are indeed unsmoked, and do have some boogers on the inside that need to be cleaned up. I do restoration also, so I’ll be attempting this on one first myself. I haven’t worked clay myself, but pretty confident with working on them. The main issue is getting them back home without USPS destroying them if I mail them.Those look unsmoked. The main thing to look for is an unobstructed airway. They have a double bottom and many times the casting will leave chunks that need to be knocked loose with a wire.
Send a couple to Norwood or another repair guy, they’ll fit some cork sheet around the stummel interior and make you a nice stem.
They are terrific smokers.
