You can do that with clays. I never had them long enough for them to change color although I have been told that it can happen. I would have though that adding wax to the porous clay would impart some kind of flavor to the tobacco but then again I could be wrong. I am glad you went with one with the varnished or glazed tip for obvious health reasons.

Very cool - I'm hesitant to put ANYTHING with a flavor (except booze) on the exterior or interior of my pipes after a sad experience with a Carmex-tained pipe sometime back. I'm glad the coconut didn't affect the flavor.
How does one drive to work with a clay pipe? Do you clench that thing?!

Does it still have the varnished tip, or did that get worn away?

It's still kinda there but kinda worn off... Seemed like it started wearing immediately but then slowed down after I started putting wax on it.

Clays are delicate, right? Well, I've accidentally dropped this baby on my wood deck once - no issues (thankfully). And they get hot as f@#$, right?!?! Despite those minor issues, yes, I do clench it - fits nicely in my crooked teeth; I just try not to clench it TOO hard. When I need to come up for some fresh air, I hold it by the stem. The bowl gets hot so you can't really hold it by the bowl. ...ever! (tried that once too) If I'm not clenching it I have figured out I can let it hang out my mouth to one side or the other and let the tip of the stem rest against the roof of my mouth and I still have good control of the pipe. The stem is kinda oblong not round so it's balanced and the bowl stays upright.
The only problem I have is my commute is shorter than it takes to finish a bowl - sucks!

Maybe your house boy holds it for you while you drive!
No, he usually holds the steering wheel from the passenger seat of my carriage while I operate the foot pedals but, I think you're onto something there! ...what if HE holds my pipe and I hold the steering wheel??? hmmm...
