Cigar in a Pipe

I, personally, would not advise smoking the used foot of a cigar in a pipe. Smoking filter tobacco is nasty. Don't ask how i know. There are some really nice cigar blends on the market and a few options for cigar leaf that you can add to home blends. I used to do what @BenMN suggested with my Cuban cigars many years ago, too. Saved caps and clippings. This is a decent option.

In addition i'd recommend trying:

Warped King's Stride
C&D Seersucker

I've enjoyed all 3 of these.

I've never had any luck slicing or chopping straight cigar for a pipe. The cigar in a pipe always tasted terrible. I have a friend that dose it quite often and he says the trick is to mix it with other pipe tobacco. I've tried this and it was much better but not something I've mastered.

I must have a genetic predisposition towards low rent pipe tobacco, or maybe it was watching my grandparents.

My grandmother’s favorite smoke was Pa’s Muriel cigar butts in one of her corn cobs and my grandfather loved sun dried Union Standard (mostly, there were other brands in the steel three pound red Folger’s can cuspidor ) chewing tobacco cusps.

Grandpa pointed out that the packages of the best chewing tobacco always read “best cigar leaf”.

And grandma said that when she was a girl of fourteen (1911) and graduated the eighth grade and went to work for her father as a muleskinner on his drayage line, her father’s employees would toss down cigar butts, she’d pick up and smoke after the others had gone to sleep, where the mules were corralled for the night.

She grew up to marry the most eligible 38 year old widower in Hickory County, who owned 2,000 acres of Pomme De Terre River bottoms and he married a 21year old six foot tall ace reporter for The Index who became Hickory County’s most famous author and who fifty years later would entertain all his grandchildren knocking the ash off a cigar on a post in their garden with an eight foot black snake whip.

But they never let a scrap of cigar tobacco go to waste, you know?

Tonight I chopped up about an inch of a NUB Connecticut cigar and gave it a go in a pipe. It was just OK. I prefer it as a cigar. I mixed in some C&D cigar leaf on a second bowl. I enjoyed it less. You reminded me it was something I wanted to try, to get that cigar flavor for a shorter smoke. I won’t revisit it. Give it a try, YMMV

Thanks fir trying. Thats what I was figuring would happen. I think to enjoy a cigar you need the wrapper flavor in mouth and then filler tobacco burning and mixing.

I will still give it a go but thanks to several of you I now know of some good ideas for decent $3 cigars to just smoke as cigars. Still cost more than a bowl (.50 cents) but will get the real deal.

Yep, that is what I did and it was surprisingly not that bad!

Cut a 50+ ring gauge cigar into 1 inch thick coins. Then just stick the coin into the pipe, no rubbing.
It will smoke like a 1 inch cigar.....im assuming.
This way you get 5-6 pipe loads, the cigar smokes like it should, and no re-lighting a stinky cigar.

Sometimes, I'll mix with C&D Winchester, which is VA and Cavendished Dominican Cigar leaf.

I could be wrong, but I thought it was Red Va and unsweetened Green River Cav.
I’ve just never picked up any cigar at all from Winchester.

This all seems very odd, smoke a pipe when you want a pipe and cigar if you want a cigar - easy.
Alternatively, buy some ‘Warped’ baccy - they blend with cigar leaf.

I've seen people cut a section from a cigar, put them as is, without rubbing it out in their pipe, just long enough it would stick out to allow for an easy lighting, and smoke away.

I grew up in NYC, remember seeing guys who were down and out plcking up cigar butts from the street and smoking them in a pipe. That image alone makes me think I’ll pass on this one.
