I have been thinking about buying a churchwarden pipe for a long time. Does anyone have one and what are the pros and cons of them.

I only own 1 churchwarden pipe. I would actually consider it a mini-churchwarden. It is a meerschaum pipe and I don't smoke it that often. The reason that I don't smoke it often is because it is meerschaum. I love the way that meers look, I'm just not crazy about smoking them. I prefer brair and wood pipes.
I would think that a bent stem would be better on a churchwarden because the pipe is so long that a straight stem would be very cumbersome. Actually now that I think about it, I don't think that I have ever seen a straight stem churchwarden.

I had a Hans Christian Anderson Stanwell churchwarden in the past. I really liked it and I don't know why I sold it to tell you the truth. Because of the long shank, it smoked nice and cool for me and looked really neat. A bent shank is more comfortable in the mouth but I used to hold it in my hand when I smoked because it was so long that if you didn't it would hurt your jaw.

My love my churchwarden, for watching movies, but the long stem makes it difficult for reading. The long stem is good for cooling the smoke, and they are just plain cool.

Anyone looked at MacQueen pipes? (See: http://macqueenpipes.com/) Some have a long wooden stem, for the Middle Earth look. I wonder if they are as fragile as a clay stem?

One of the first pipes I bought was a churchwarden, largely because of the mystique and stereotypical associations it has with luxuriant relaxation, and partly because, practically, it's supposed to cool the smoke.
I must have bought a subpar one, because the bowl burns hot, but I never had a good smoke from the thing. Every once in a couple months I'll take it out and give it a try, but it never fails to disappoint. It's actually more of a pain to use, for me, than a regular pipe, and its false promise of relaxation only increased my irritation.
I seemed to have gone towards the other end of the spectrum, and now have something of a penchant for quite short pipes.

Anyone interested in a Lord Of The Rings style pipes, should check out the one at www.vauen.de. It comes with a long, and short stem.

If you like to cruise foreign web pages, here's what I use for a quick, often entertaining, translation: http://wordmonkey.info/
Some of the translations it makes into English are quite amusing, and I assume it works the other way around, as when I recently placed an order for these Galibier Super Guides I'm wearing today from Aux Vieux Campeur. I imagine the folks on the other end were laughing at my Word Monkey French.

Actually, it is Vauen's regular Churchwardens that come with, both the long and short stems. They have a full line ( Aragorn, Gimli, Bilbo, and Gandolf) of The Lord of the Rings series. Just click on the British flag for English.

I enjoy my Peterson church warden on an occasional basis - the bowl gets a little hot as it is fairly thin walled but the smoke is cool - I don't smoke it all that often and never unless I'v got a few long pipe cleaners knockin' about or it tastes a bit iffy the next time I use it!

Mick, if you go to an arts and crafts shop, they have large bundles of long cleaners, for cheap.

Bringing home a new pipe is always exciting, like making a new acquaintance, and anticipating the beginning of a long and rewarding friendship. Many happy puffs, ghost45 !
