I can't even read with a churchwarden, end up bumping it and getting ash everywhere. Churchwardens are a great smoke, but it's all you can do while smoking the thing. Now if you have someone to hold the book for you....

So far I have only two semi-churchwardens, and I love the way they smoke. I'll probably get more over time, possibly full-size ones. Yes, they're unwieldy to carry around but I enjoy smoking them (while seated, of course). As for not wanting to be seen in public with one, I have one comment about that: pipes are not fashion accessories, so the last thing I worry about is how a pipe may appear to anyone other than me.

Coming from a guy who used to wear a 12" high red mohawk, ride around on a loud-ass harley with a 6" barrelled .357 magnum on his hip, there's plenty of things you can do that will get you stared at (or thrown onto the pavement by the cops). If you're willing to put up with the occasional jeer or dope-head remark, rock on and do your thing. I plan on ordering that very pipe at some point. The closest to "public", though I plan on smoking it while enjoying a drink in front of my house, though. I'd be too afraid of accidently breaking the darn thing.

HAHA cool chair, as for churchwardens, i dont own one, but have a couple clay tavern pipes. Even if it werent as delicate as it is, a pipe that size is just unwieldy. Too much crap to carry as it is. Lighter, matches tool, a wooden dowl (my favorite tamper) a tin, or a pouch with tobacco in it, if its flake a peice of something to rub it out on, pipe cleaners, maybe a qtip..... nah, ill stick with a smaller pipe myself. Save the big ones for home.
BUUUUTTTT, its all your own preferences, you have yours, i have mine... Smoke what you like, Like what you smoke

My churchwarden is definitely a movie watching pipe. I think it is a little bit impractical for using when out and about.

I smoke my churchwarden pretty regularly at work waiting for my shift to start. Admittedly i get quite a lot of odd looks. But thats never really bothered me.

I've got a B-C churchwarden and it is mostly an evening pipe, the only reason45 I would not take it walkabout is 'cos it will not fit in my pipe bag.

I've never given too much thought to smoking my churchwardens in public. I must say though I do like smoking it better sitting down. Traveling with a churchwarden is a bit of an issue for me. Because of the longer stem, there is a great deal of potential stress that can be applied to the tenon. Thus the breakage potential is higher.
Now smoking my long stem calabash in public would be a sight! Actually I think a calabash would draw way more attention than a churchwarden.
